Windows keyboard input issue: Z key stops working across multiple keyboards and persists after reset

Issue

The Z key does not register when pressed by itself.

Shift + Z works

Ctrl + Z works

  • Z alone does not work (intermittent)
  • Z works in BOIS menu

Physical key is functional

Environment

  • Initially using Razer Ornata V3 (issue occurred; attempted fix terminated firmware RIP)
  • Windows 11 "keep files cloud reset" (worked for some time, issue returned)
  • Currently using Razer Huntsman V3 (same issue persists)
  • Issue occurs across multiple keyboards, not device-specific

Scope

Occurs system-wide (Notepad, browsers, login fields)

  • Affects the On-Screen Keyboard (input registered, not output)

Restart or keyboard language/layout reset temporarily fixes it

  • Issue returns after some time after reboot

Persists after Windows reset (Keep personal files)

What I’ve Tried

  • Multiple keyboards and USB ports
  • Deleting HID devices
  • Razer keyboard firmware reset esc+caps+space
  • Reinstall/wipe of razer software
  • Windows reset

Keyboard language/layout reset (temporary only)

Accessibility features disabled (Sticky/Filter/Toggle Keys)

No macros, remaps, or custom key bindings

Hardware failure ruled out (modifier keys always work)

Request

Looking for:

  • A permanent fix, or
  • A known Windows input/layout issue that can suppress a single key across devices

Any guidance on where Windows stores or reapplies keyboard input state would help.

    FIXED MYSELF

    Fix Summary**

    All praise chatgpt

Cause: Razer Synapse. It installed a hidden super secret keyboard HID device driver that blocked the unmodified Z key system-wide (even On-Screen Keyboard). Shift+Z / Ctrl+Z still worked.

    How

Open Device Manager → Keyboards → HID Keyboard Device → Driver Details

    Found Razer filter driver: RzDev_0099.sys

    Uninstalled Razer Synapse

Uninstalled the HID device with “Delete driver software” checked

    1. Disabled all Razer services, nuked all razer files, razer exorcism
    2. Deleted Razer account (hoping to reinstall later with reset settings and cloud)

Result was confirmed Synapse profile/driver issue. Not a Windows issue. Not a keyboard issue.

Also some advice, don't screw around in that menu.

It appears that you are experiencing a persistent issue with the Z key not registering when pressed alone, despite it functioning correctly in other contexts (like BIOS and with modifier keys). Given that the problem persists across multiple keyboards and after various resets, it suggests that the issue may be related to software or settings within Windows rather than a hardware failure.

Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:

    1. Check Keyboard Layout and Language Settings: Ensure that your keyboard layout is set correctly in Windows. Sometimes, incorrect settings can lead to unexpected behavior with certain keys.
    2. Update Keyboard Drivers: Make sure that your keyboard drivers are up to date. You can do this through Device Manager by right-clicking on the keyboard and selecting "Update driver."
    3. Run Keyboard Troubleshooter: Windows has a built-in troubleshooter for keyboard issues. You can access this by going to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Keyboard.
    4. Check for Third-Party Software Conflicts: Since you mentioned using Razer software, ensure that there are no conflicting settings or profiles that might affect the keyboard input. Temporarily disable or uninstall any third-party keyboard management software to see if the issue persists.
    5. Create a New User Profile: Sometimes, user profile corruption can lead to strange behavior. Creating a new user profile can help determine if the issue is user-specific.
    6. Check Accessibility Settings: Ensure that any accessibility features that might affect keyboard input (like Sticky Keys or Filter Keys) are turned off.
    7. Reset Windows Input Settings: If the issue persists, consider resetting the input settings to their defaults. This can sometimes resolve underlying configuration issues.
    8. Check for Windows Updates: Ensure that your Windows 11 installation is fully updated, as updates can fix bugs and improve hardware compatibility.

If none of these steps resolve the issue, it may be worth checking forums or support communities for any similar reports regarding Windows 11 keyboard input issues, as there may be a known bug affecting specific key inputs.
