When I convert footnotes to endnotes within a section using "Endnotes: End of section" and Numbering "Restart each section" and Apply changes to "This section," and every section is divided by "Section Break: Next Page," why does it throw the endnotes to the end of the document?

Hello,

It sounds like the Suppress Endnotes setting might be active for that section. This layout setting overrides it and pushes them forward to the end of the document.

Go to the Layout tab on the main ribbon, then click the small arrow in the bottom right corner of the Page Setup group to open the dialog window. Click on the Layout tab inside that window. Make sure the Suppress endnotes checkbox is unchecked. You should verify this setting is off for every section where you want the notes to stay put.

Let me know if that fixes the positioning!

Thank you for the feedback. It was a "suppress endnotes" problem in that section. This worked, except the sequence is different in my Word for Mac. I found this in another Q/A elsewhere:

Provided the endnotes are set for End of Section:

Click in a section.

Go to the Layout tab of the Ribbon

Click the Margins tool

Select Custom Margins

Select the Layout pane

Check suppress endnotes

Alternatively you can go to Format> Document in the main menu as opposed to steps 2,3 & 4.

As far as I know, there is no option to convert notes by section.

In Word for Windows, I would do the following: In the endnote area, select the endnotes you want to convert and then choose the convert option on the context (right-click) menu. I am not sure if this will work in Word for Mac.

Thank you for your feedback. I didn't word my question quite correctly. I have footnotes in only one section, but I was trying to change the footnotes to endnotes by converting the entire document, and it did not work. Turns out "suppress footnotes" was checked throughout the document by the person before me. I figured it out with the instructions above. Thanks for your comments, though.

Thanks for the follow-up. It is possible to convert the endnotes to footnotes from the section where the endnotes do display, though, even if they are suppressed in the section where the endnote mark resides. At least that works in Word for Windows.
