Fully Duplicate Class Teams?

Howdy.

I work in a school that teaches entirely online through Microsoft Teams.

I am wondering if it is possible to create a duplicate of an existing Class Team that copies across the HomePage as well as other settings. This is with the aim of having a consistent home page for all classes with links out to common resources, but saving teachers the time of creating it over and over again.

Further to this, is there a method of creating teams en masse and/or importing class lists (with school emails) into class Teams?

Thanks!

Dear @Smith, Harry (Open Access College),

Good day. Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum!

According to your description, please kindly allow me to clarify some information:

At this time, Microsoft Teams does not support fully duplicating an existing Class Team in a way that copies the Home page layout, content, and all settings in a single action. While Teams does allow you to create a new team from an existing team, this option can only copy selected components such as channels, tabs, apps, and team settings. The Home page content itself including layout and posts is not fully replicated and typically requires some reconfiguration after the team is created.

That said, there are supported approaches that schools commonly used to achieve consistency and reduce setup time:

    Method 1:

If you want to use the same data, channels, and settings from a current team or if you or if you'd like to use an existing Microsoft 365 group to create a new team, you can make a copy. Then, you can choose how your new team is organized and set up.

For reference: Create a team from an existing team or group in Microsoft Teams

    Note:

    • Your org can restrict who can create teams. If you can't create a team or need to turn off team creation, check with your IT admin.
    • After you create the new team, you’ll still need to configure the settings for apps and tabs.

    Method 2:

Many schools centralize common resources (links, documents, welcome content) in a shared SharePoint site or page, then add this as a website or SharePoint tab in every Class Team. This provides a consistent “home” experience across classes without needing to rebuild content each time.

    Method 3:

For more technical scenarios, IT admins can use Microsoft Graph/PowerShell to automate team creation and membership assignment. However, this is not exposed in the Teams user interface and is typically handled centrally rather than by individual teachers.

Currently, Microsoft Teams does not support a direct feature to fully duplicate a Class Team, including the Home Page and other settings. However, you can use the Microsoft Graph API (currently in preview) to create, configure, clone, and archive teams, which may help in achieving a similar outcome by automating some of the setup processes for new teams.

For creating teams en masse and importing class lists, School Data Sync (SDS) can automate the creation of Microsoft 365 Groups and Class Teams based on your school’s data. SDS allows you to sync class and roster data, which can streamline the process of setting up new teams with the appropriate members. You can ingest data using OneRoster API connectors or by sending CSV files in supported formats.

For more detailed guidance on creating class teams and managing memberships, you may refer to the resources on School Data Sync and Microsoft Teams PowerShell.
