My old computer system crashed. It had windows 10 on it. I got a new system now, I installed win 11, and I am unable to activate it using the license I had before. I expected to be able to transfer the activation over.

Hello, the license should be transferable. Please try the AI's suggestion first, and if it doesn't work, please confirm that you have installed the same edition, as licenses are not interchangeable between different editions.

If you are unable to activate Windows 11 using your previous license, it could be due to the fact that the digital license tied to your old system may not automatically transfer to the new system. When you install Windows on a new device, the activation process may require a new activation key or may not recognize the previous digital license.

To resolve this issue, you can try the following steps:

    1. Use the Activation Troubleshooter: Go to Settings > Update & Security > Activation, and run the Activation Troubleshooter. This may help in reactivating your Windows if it detects a valid license linked to your Microsoft account.
    2. Sign in with your Microsoft Account: Ensure you are signed in with the same Microsoft account that was used on your previous installation. This can sometimes help in retrieving the digital license.
    3. Contact Microsoft Support: If the above steps do not work, you may need to contact Microsoft Support. They can assist in reactivating your license, especially if it was a retail license linked to your account.

Keep in mind that if your previous system was an OEM version of Windows, the license may not be transferable to a new device.
