Hello everyone,

In Microsoft Word, How can I insert left superscript in the equation editor?

I know that the normal superscript in default is located to the right as in the following image in x^2

but how to put 2 to the left instead of making it to the right? I know that I can insert Left Subscript-Superscript as it shown in the following image

but there is an extra box I don't want to insert and maybe some people to solve this problem type a space in it, but I don't want to insert the box of subscript and type in it a space for every time, I want only to insert left superscript, so how to do that?

You don't need to type a space in the box. Just leave it empty. When you print the document, change the View to Reading Mode, or convert document to a PDF, the lower box disappears. The box is shown only when you are editing the document.

    Dear @Ahmed142,

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Q&A forum.

I understand you’re trying to insert a left superscript in Word without having to type a space to fill the empty base each time. After researching this behavior, I’m afraid that Microsoft Word currently does not support a true left superscript without a base element. This issue persists because Word's MathML engine requires a "base" for every script. As a result, the available workarounds such as using the first superscript box only or relying on left subscript-superscript formatting still require entering a space or placeholder character. Among these options, using an empty base is generally the cleanest approach, as it avoids displaying an unwanted subscript placeholder.

If this is a feature you would like to see, I suggest keeping an eye on the Microsoft Word blog or the Microsoft 365 Roadmap | Microsoft 365 for any updates on this feature. In the meantime, I apologize for the inconvenience this may cause. I also strongly recommend that you share your detailed experience and feedback directly with the Microsoft product team through their official channels. This is the most effective way to make your voice heard and influence future feature improvements and adjustments.  You can visit the Word · Community to submit a new idea or vote on existing one. Our product team is in charge of this site, and they constantly check customer reviews and feedback. The higher the number of votes, the more attention the team will pay to it. Many features are developed and improved based on customer feedback. As a moderator, I will also pass along your feedback to the appropriate team for further consideration. While we don't directly influence product design, user feedback is actively reviewed and helps prioritize future development. If you’re unable to post your feedback yourself, please feel free to reach out to me and I’ll be happy to submit it on your behalf.

I really understand how convenient this feature would be for your workflow. I want you to know that I wish I had a way to change it for you directly but as a moderator of Q&A forum, my ability to assist is with the existing product functionality and the power to influence its design rests entirely with our product development team. I appreciate your kindness and understanding as we deal with these evolutionary product changes. Please get in touch if you need anything else. Have a wonderful day.
