    Hi,

Thank you for sharing your question. I completely understand how stressful this is, especially when your computer is central to preparing for legal hearings; losing access unexpectedly can make the situation feel urgent and chaotic.

In many cases like this, Windows hasn’t fully deleted your data desktop files, shortcuts, and icons often disappear because of system glitches, a temporary user profile, OneDrive folder redirection issues, or settings that changed after a crash or update. Microsoft’s guidance notes that missing desktop icons and files commonly happen when the wrong Desktop folder is being shown or the “Show desktop icons” toggle gets switched off, and restoring the correct folder path or enabling icons typically brings the items back.  If files were stored in your Desktop, Documents, or Pictures folders that were being backed up to OneDrive, checking OneDrive’s Desktop folder and adjusting its Location settings can often restore the original content.  If everything appears missing, it may mean Windows signed you into a temporary profile, which hides your real files but does not erase them; signing out, restarting, and signing back in typically restores the correct profile. If some items were actually deleted, they might still be recoverable using the Recycle Bin or Windows file‑recovery methods documented on Microsoft Support.

Before I guide you through the exact recovery steps, can you tell me whether your PC recently crashed, updated, reset, or asked you to sign in again and do you remember whether your Desktop or Documents folders were synced with OneDrive?

Once you tell me what happened right before the files disappeared, I can tailor the steps to restore your data as quickly and safely as possible, and I can also help you stabilize the system so nothing else goes missing.

    I hope this helps.

    Best Regards,

    Noel
