Went to change my email address to a new address and got an error message telling me to change it to non business address. The business address is the address where I get all my emails. How can I override so I can but in the new address.

    Hi @Scott Wilson,

Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A forum.

Thank you for reaching out regarding the issue you encountered while trying to change the sign‑in email on your Microsoft account. The following information explains why the system displayed the message asking for a non‑business email address and what options are available moving forward.

The email address you attempted to add is recognized as a business or work address associated with an organization’s domain. Microsoft personal accounts only accept aliases that belong to personal, non‑business email domains. Business and organizational email domains are managed through Microsoft Entra ID and cannot be used as sign‑in aliases for personal accounts. Because of this policy, there is no way to override the restriction.

Option 1: Add a personal email address

A personal email address such as Outlook.com, Hotmail.com, Gmail.com, Yahoo.com, or any other non‑business domain can be added as a new alias and set as the primary sign‑in address.

Option 2: Use the business address with a work account

If the intention is to use the business email with Microsoft services, a work account associated with that business domain should be used. Work accounts are created and managed by the organization that owns the domain.

Option 3: Keep the personal account and receive mail at the business address

If the goal is simply to receive messages at the business address, email forwarding can be set up from the business mailbox to the preferred email inbox. This allows continued use of the personal Microsoft account without changing its alias.

If you would like, please share the type of email domain you are attempting to add, and further guidance can be provided. Instructions for adding aliases or managing account settings can also be shared based on your preferred option.

I hope the information provided proves useful.

Thank you for your patience and understanding throughout this process. Should you have any questions or need further assistance, feel free to reach out at any time.

I look forward to hearing from you.

If you're encountering an error when trying to change your email address to a business address in Microsoft 365, it may be due to the permissions associated with your account or the specific settings in your organization. Here are some steps you can take to resolve the issue:

    1. Check Permissions: Ensure that you have the necessary permissions to change the email address. You typically need to be a user administrator to make such changes.
    2. Use the Admin Center: If you have admin access, go to the Microsoft 365 admin center, navigate to Users > Active users, select the user whose email you want to change, and then select Manage username and email. Make sure the correct domain is selected.
    3. Domain Verification: Ensure that the domain you are trying to use for the business email address is verified and added to your Microsoft 365 account. You can check this in the Settings > Domains section of the admin center.
    4. Contact Support: If you continue to face issues, consider reaching out to Microsoft support for assistance, as they can provide specific guidance based on your account setup.

These steps should help you troubleshoot the issue and successfully change your email address to your desired business address.
