If the touchscreen doesn’t respond at all outside of Windows, for example in the BIOS or UEFI screen, that is usually a strong sign of hardware failure because no Windows drivers are involved there. You can check this safely without uninstalling anything. Another clue is Device Manager. If the HID compliant touch screen is missing or shows an error even after restarting, that can also point to a hardware issue. Uninstalling the driver is optional and not required to confirm a failure.

To determine if you have a hardware failure with your touch screen, you can utilize the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit (SDT). Here are the steps you can follow:

    1. Run the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit (SDT): This tool can help identify issues with your device's hardware, including the touch screen. Ensure your device is updated to the latest OS/FW versions before running the toolkit.
    2. Select Repair in SDT: From the SDT welcome screen, choose the Repair option, and then select Repair Setup and Validation. This will allow you to run tests specifically related to the touch display.
    3. Touch Display Calibration: Run the Touch Display (Calibration) tool. Follow the on-screen instructions. If the calibration fails, it may indicate a hardware issue with the display.
    4. Check for Problem Codes: You can also use Device Manager to check if the touch screen device is marked with a problem code. Look for a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark, which indicates an issue. You can find more information about the problem code in the Device Manager properties dialog.

If the SDT indicates that the hardware is functioning properly, but you still experience issues, you might consider reinstalling the driver as a next step, but ensure to back up your data and proceed with caution.
