Hello, I just learned that it is NOT good to shut down computer. It is best to put the computer to sleep at night. You shut down when you plan to be away a long time.

What say you?

    Hi LiWright,
Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum. I'm happy to help.

Personally, I'm an old fashion user so I always shut down my computer, even if I'm only away for an hour.

Nowadays we have SSD with very short boot time, I'm convenient with a minute for computer to completely start while I take a sip of tea or coffee.

An additional benefit of shutdown is I can minimize the risk of memory leak. Some applications do not well design enough so their memory may fill up the RAM and shutdown / reboot is the best way to clean up.

Besides, I want a fresh start of system and all applications with best performance. I'm not convenient if the system or some applications have errors or slow down because of long sleep and I have to reboot the computer while I'm using it. It might not happen, but I better prevent it.

The last thing I wonder is power loss. There's nothing to worry about if I saved all my work and shut down the computer.

To me, the only benefit that sleep mode brings is fast resume which I don't need.

So, Sleep or Shutdown is a preference choice. If you're like me and convenient with a minute before fresh start, just save all your work and shut it down. If you're busy and want your computer always ready for you, you choose sleep mode.

I hope that above information is helpful to you.

Hi, I'm Bernard, a fellow Windows user. I'm happy to help!

Q&A Assist is correct. Think of it this way: when you shut down the PC, it completely turns off all active hardware so it can rest, and it takes time to boot up because everything is starting fresh.

When you put the PC to sleep, the hardware is still partially active, and when you wake it up, all the programs and services you were using are still open. However, over time, this can cause the PC to slow down, although you may not notice it right away.

If you plan to use the device again within 3–5 hours, putting it to sleep is fine. However, if it will be longer than that, I recommend shutting it down to ensure the PC starts fresh and runs as optimally as possible.

Putting your computer to sleep or shutting it down depends on your usage patterns and preferences.

    • Sleep Mode: This is a good option if you plan to return to your computer shortly. Sleep mode allows your computer to enter a low-power state while keeping your session active, making it quick to resume work. It's particularly beneficial for mobile systems as it can help conserve battery life while allowing for instant access to your applications.
    • Shutdown: This is more suitable when you won't be using your computer for an extended period. Shutting down completely can help with system performance and reliability over time, as it clears the memory and stops all processes. However, it takes longer to boot up compared to waking from sleep.

In general, if you are frequently using your computer throughout the day, sleep mode is convenient. If you are done for the day or will be away for a long time, shutting down may be the better choice.

Ultimately, the best practice can vary based on individual needs and how often you use your computer.
