I own Microsoft Office Home 2024 v 16.101.3. Recently any Microsoft Word docs that come to me will not allow me to edit. This is a new problem. I bought Microsoft Office Home because I do not want to pay for an expensive subscription. Is there something I can do to get around this problem?

Hi! This largely depends on how people are sharing files.

Microsoft Office Home 2024 has limitations, such as only being installable on one device, not having real-time collaboration (for files edited by more than one person simultaneously), and not having 1TB of OneDrive storage, unlike the Microsoft 365 subscription.

    Please answer these questions:

    1. Where are people sharing these files? OneDrive, Google Drive, company server, WhatsApp, email...
    2. How and where do you open these files? Do you download them and open them on your computer, or do you open them directly in OneDrive?
    3. If you use OneDrive, do you use OneDrive Desktop (installed on your computer) or OneDrive Web (accessed through a browser)?
    4. Are the accounts of the people sharing files with you corporate accounts?

Please send me all the details.

If you are unable to edit Word documents sent to you, it may be due to the files being opened in "Viewing" mode. This can happen if the files have been transferred from another computer or if they are marked as Read-only. Here are a few steps you can take to resolve the issue:

    1. Check File Attributes: Right-click on the Word document, select Properties, and ensure that the Read-only attribute is unchecked. If it is checked, uncheck it and click Apply.
    2. Unblock the File: In the Properties window, if you see an Unblock button, click it to remove any restrictions on the file.
    3. Edit Mode: If the document still opens in Viewing mode, look for an option in the upper right corner of the Word window that allows you to switch to Edit mode.
    4. Local Files: If the files are local and trusted, signing in with your Microsoft account is optional, but it may help ensure that your Office is activated properly.

By following these steps, you should be able to edit the Word documents you receive.
