Duplicate display not working

I use Windows 11 for home. My laptop is an ASUS TUF Gaming A15 (Model number FA506IHR). I tried connecting a drawing tablet to my laptop via HDMI, but whenever I tried to duplicate the display, it didn't work and instead, the display of my drawing and laptop started to turn off and on quickly and randomly. Any other display option works, just not the duplicate display one. I also tried this with my TV, and the same problem arose, meaning that it's an issue with my laptop. I was wondering how to fix this. The only way to stop the random flickering is to disconnect the device, select another display option and reconnect. Extending the display works, and so does only showing content on display 1 or 2. Just the duplicating doesn't.

Thanks for the update. When Duplicate is on, what resolution shows for each display in Advanced display?

Zoom in and out in Duplicate points to a scaling or resolution conflict.

    Open Settings, System, Display.

Set Scale to 100 percent on both screens.

Set both resolutions to 1920 by 1080.

Check Advanced display, confirm both stay at 60 Hz.

Connect HDMI directly to the laptop, no dock or adapter.

If Duplicate still fails while Extend works, contact ASUS support with a DxDiag report. This points to HDMI output behavior on the device.

    Dear fried egg

Thank you for your question and for sharing the details into Microsoft Q&A Forum.

I’m sorry you’re running into this, flickering only when selecting Duplicate can be frustrating, especially when the other display modes work normally. I also noticed the Independent Advisor’s answer in the thread is very well-structured and definitely worth trying first. Please follow that guidance as it targets a common cause of Duplicate-mode instability.

In addition to the Independent Advisor’s suggestion, you can also try some checks below. Please test Duplicate after each section so we can identify which change makes a difference.

    1. Make sure Windows is fully updated (including optional drivers)
    • Go to Settings > Windows Update
    • Select Check for updates and install everything offered
    • Open Advanced options > Optional updates
    • Install any available driver updates (Display/Graphics/Chipset-related if listed)
    • Restart the PC once updates finish
    1. Turn off display features that can interfere with mirroring (HDR / Auto HDR / VRR)
    • Go to Settings > System > Display
    • If you see HDR settings: Open HDR and turn HDR Off and turn Auto HDR Off (if shown)
    • Go to Settings > System > Display > Graphics > Change default graphics settings: turn Variable refresh rate Off
    1. Reset the graphics driver session
    • When the flickering begins, press Win + Ctrl + Shift + B to resets the graphics driver session.  Then try Win + P > Duplicate again.
    1. Repair Windows system files
    • Right-click Start > Windows Terminal (run as Administrator)
    • Run these commands one by one:
      •  sfc /scannow
      • DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
    • Restart the PC and test Duplicate

I hope the suggestions above help you resolve the flickering when selecting Duplicate and keep your external display connection stable. Wishing you a smooth and consistent experience when using your ASUS laptop with your drawing tablet or TV on Windows 11.

Duplicate needs both screens set to the same resolution and refresh rate. Mismatch causes flicker.

Open Settings. Go to System. Go to Display. Open Advanced display.

Set both displays to 1920 by 1080. Set both to 60 Hz.

Install the official ASUS graphics driver for FA506IHR from ASUS Support. Hybrid graphics laptops depend on the OEM driver for stable external display.

Restart. Reconnect HDMI. Try Duplicate again.
