How to access Microsoft Authenticator App after losing my phone.

The screen on my Samsung Galaxy S10+ just bricked and I can't access anything on it anymore, which includes my Authenticator App. When I tried regaining access from a new phone, It wouldn't let me sign in without a code from my other phone. It gave me no options besides using the Authenticator, so I'm pretty much screwed. I need to get access on my new phone or I won't be able to access my school's canvas page or anything else for that matter. So far I'm only able to write this because my computer's still signed in. Any ideas?

    Hi Stephen Fitzgerald

Thank you for reaching out to the Q&A Forum

Since this email address was issued by your college (ending in .edu), this is considered a Microsoft 365 Education account.

And when you change to other phone, the Microsoft Authenticator app doesn’t automatically transfer your account settings because the multi-factor authentication (MFA) configuration is linked to the specific device where it was originally set up.

For security and privacy reasons, Microsoft Support does not have access to manage or reset passwords for school-managed accounts. Microsoft provides the software, but your school acts as the administrator.

You must contact your School’s IT Help Desk or Student Support department. They are the only ones with the administrative access to reset your password or verify your identity to unlock the account. Let them know you are locked out and that the self-service recovery is failing. They will manually reset it for you based on this information: Manage authentication methods for Microsoft Entra multifactor authentication - Microsoft Entra ID | Microsoft Learn

For additional information, you can refer to: Common problems with two-step verification for a work or school account - Microsoft Support

    I hope this information helps.

To regain access to your Microsoft Authenticator app after losing your phone, you can follow these steps:

    1. Use Alternative Recovery Options: If you have set up alternative recovery methods (like SMS or email), try using those to receive a verification code. However, if your account is only allowing Authenticator, you may need to proceed with the next steps.
    2. Contact Microsoft Support: Since you are locked out of your account and cannot access the Authenticator app, you will need to contact Microsoft support. As the only global admin, you can request assistance from the Microsoft Data Protection team. They have the tools to verify your identity and help you regain access to your account.
    3. Create a Temporary Account: If contacting support is challenging, consider creating a new trial tenant. This will allow you to submit a support ticket regarding your locked account. You can explain your situation and request help from the Data Protection team.
    4. Follow the IVR Prompts: When you call Microsoft support, follow the prompts carefully to ensure you reach the right department. Indicate that you are having issues with the Authenticator and that you are the only administrator.
    5. Documentation Ready: Have all necessary documentation ready, including your email, phone number, and any other relevant details about your account, as this will help expedite the recovery process.

These steps should help you regain access to your Microsoft account and the Authenticator app on your new phone.
