Why can't I talk to a human technical support person anymore? -- Can't change product keys

I need someone to talk to so I can understand what I just bought. Because I paid for Microsoft 365 Business Basics, I can no longer find the product key, so I cannot change it in my applications. The fact that I cannot get someone to help tells me how poor your company is. If there were other options, I would be going to another company because nobody seems to want to help. Even the AI assist basically states that a human cannot be reached, and the tone is kind of like, go fuck off, it's this that doesn't work for you. So what do we do? Who can I talk to about this mess?

Keep in mind that you are not communicating with Microsoft here, only with your fellow users.

If you describe what isn't working as expected, someone should be able to point you in the right direction.

If you are trying to use a 365 Basic subscription to install Office locally on PCs or Macs, note that that version is for web and mobile access only; see https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/business/microsoft-365-business-basic.

Alternatively, since you are a business customer, you should be able to access business phone support. Go to https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/customer-service-phone-numbers-c0389ade-5640-e588-8b0e-28de8afeb3f2 .

    Hello @Jason Thompson,

I understand how frustrating this has been, especially when you’re trying to make sense of a recent purchase and feel like you can’t reach a real person for help. I’m sorry this experience has come across that way.

First, I’d like to clarify one key point: Microsoft 365 Business Basics does not use a traditional product key. This subscription is activated by signing in with the Microsoft account (work or school account) that was used to purchase it. Because of that, there will be no product key available to enter into the applications.

If an app is asking you for a product key, it usually means:

    • The app installed is a one-time (perpetual) Office version, or
    • You are signed in with an account that does not own the Business Basics subscription.

Since this involves licensing and backend configuration, this is something Microsoft’s technical support team will need to check directly. A support engineer can review the tenant configuration, run the necessary diagnostics or synchronization tools, and, if needed, escalate the issue to a specialized team for deeper investigation.

Here’s what your Microsoft 365 Global Administrator should do next:

    1. Submit a Service Request: The Global Admin should create a service request with Microsoft support to get advanced technical assistance and diagnostics. For detailed instructions on how to get support, please refer to Get support - Microsoft 365 admin.
    2. Find Your Microsoft 365 Admin: If you’re unsure who the Global Admin is within your organization, you can find guidance on locating them here: How do I find my Microsoft 365 admin? - Microsoft Support.
    3. Call Microsoft Support: For additional assistance, use this link to find the appropriate contact number: Global Customer Service phone numbers - Microsoft Support
    4. _Contact a Reseller (if applicable): _If your Office 365 subscriptions are managed through a federated partner or reseller and the Global Admin cannot open a service request, they should contact the reseller’s support provider. The reseller can assist with initiating the request and coordinating with the Office 365 support team.

Note: If you’re an end-user, please coordinate with your Office 365 Global Administrator to handle these steps.

Please note that in this community, moderators have limited access to backend systems, which is why we need to redirect cases like this to Microsoft’s official support channels to ensure you get accurate and timely assistance.

I appreciate your patience, and I truly hope this helps you get connected with the right team to resolve this properly. If you can share which application is asking for a product key, that may also help narrow things down.

I understand your frustration with not being able to reach a human technical support person. To speak with Microsoft Support regarding your Microsoft 365 Business Basics and to retrieve your product key, you can follow these steps:

    1. In the search bar, type "Get Help" and open it.
    2. Type "Chat with an agent" and press Enter.
    3. Click the "Contact support" button at the bottom.
    4. Choose the Products and services for which you need help.
    5. Follow the on-screen prompts to connect with a live agent.

Alternatively, you can select the "Call me back" option and complete the information so they can call you. This should help you get in touch with someone who can assist you further.
