A cloud-based task management app from Microsoft that helps users organize and manage daily tasks across devices.
Dear @Kim Fulton,
Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.
I understand you’re trying to link Microsoft To Do with your Outlook Calendar so that anything added to your task list automatically appears on the calendar.
Currently, Microsoft To Do and Outlook do sync tasks with each other, but they do not automatically turn every new task into a calendar event. Tasks you create in To Do are stored in Exchange Online and appear in Outlook Tasks as long as both apps use the same account. They will only show up on your calendar if you actually schedule them.
To Do is built for managing tasks, due dates and reminders, while Outlook Calendar is meant for time‑based events. You can view your tasks next to your calendar in the My Day pane and if you want a task to become a calendar event, you can simply drag it from the To Do section into the calendar. That is currently the supported way to add a task directly into your schedule.
Since you haven’t specified which Outlook version you’re using (New Outlook, Classic Outlook, or Outlook on the web), here are the available workaround steps for each scenario:
Option 1: Drag tasks into your Outlook calendar
- This method is supported in the New Outlook for Windows and Outlook on the web.
Open Outlook and go to the Calendar view.
Select My Day at the top.
Switch to the To Do tab.
Drag any task to your preferred time slot in the calendar.
The task will become an actual calendar event without needing to reenter the details.
This article provides further guidance on the topic: Drag a task to your calendar with To Do in Outlook - Microsoft Support
- If you are using Classic Outlook, you can check this article: Customize the To-Do Bar in classic Outlook - Microsoft Support
Please note that Classic Outlook only supports dragging and dropping items from Outlook Tasks, not directly from Microsoft To Do. Tasks from To Do must sync to Outlook Tasks through Exchange first. Once they appear in Outlook Tasks, you can then drag them onto your Calendar.
Option 2: Use Power Automate as an advanced workaround
This option offers automation but with limitations. It does not continuously sync updates unless additional logic is created.
- Use the Microsoft To Do connector to detect or create new tasks
- Use the Outlook connector to create calendar events based on those tasks
- If you need updates on either side to stay in sync, add extra conditions and flows to handle changes
Additional information is available in the following resources:

I completely understand how these limitations in To Do can feel disruptive. It’s not just about aesthetics; these differences can genuinely affect how smoothly you work and navigate your day.
