    Hi jess ward,

Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A forum.

The behavior you're encountering is usually related to how CD‑burning tools work in Windows 11, not a hardware failure.

Please confirm if the CD‑burning service is running

    • Press Win + R, type services.msc
    • Find IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service
    • Set Startup type to Manual
    • If it’s not running, click Start, then close and reboot

In Windows 11, the newer Media Player app does not support burning audio CDs. Audio CD burning is available only in Windows Media Player Legacy.

    • Open Start, type Windows Media Player Legacy, and launch it
    • Insert a blank CD‑R
    • Select the Burn tab > choose Audio CD > add your MP3 files > Start burn

If Media Player Legacy is missing

    • Go to Settings > Apps > Optional features
    • Select Add a feature and install Windows Media Player
    • Restart the PC, then open Windows Media Player Legacy

    Hello,

Since your drive can read discs, you don't need to worry about that specific registry key right now. That fix is mainly for when the DVD drive disappears completely from Windows and cannot be seen at all.

To get a better idea of what is happening, what software are you using to burn the MP3 CD? (Windows Media Player, File Explorer, etc.)

Also, when you insert the blank disc, does the computer acknowledge it is there, or do you get a specific error message asking you to insert media?

It seems that you are having trouble with your CD/DVD drive not being recognized properly for burning CDs, particularly for MP3s. Here are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot this issue:

    1. Check Device Manager: Ensure that your CD/DVD drive is recognized in Device Manager. If there are any issues, you might see a yellow exclamation mark next to the drive.
    2. Update Drivers: Make sure that the drivers for your CD/DVD drive are up to date. You can do this by right-clicking the drive in Device Manager and selecting "Update driver."
    3. Registry Check: The registry path you mentioned (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}) is for CD-ROM drives. If this key is missing, it could indicate a problem with the drive installation. You may want to consider reinstalling the drive:
      • Uninstall the CD/DVD drive from Device Manager and restart your computer. Windows should automatically reinstall the driver.
    4. Burning Software: Ensure that the software you are using to burn CDs is compatible with your operating system and is updated to the latest version.
    5. Test with Different Media: Sometimes, the issue could be with the CD/DVD media itself. Try using a different brand or type of disc to see if the problem persists.
    6. Check for Windows Updates: Make sure your Windows 11 system is fully updated, as updates can sometimes resolve hardware compatibility issues.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, you may want to consider checking for any specific settings in your burning software that might affect the recognition of the CD/DVD drive for burning purposes.
