I created a plan in planner that I want to delete - but the down arrow next to the plan only has the option to "copy link to plan". I can't find any other way to delete this plan. Help please!

    Hi @Jackie Johnson,

    I hope you’re doing well.

I wanted to clarify the situation regarding the plan you’re trying to delete in Microsoft Planner. The plan you created is actually a sub‑plan within a larger group plan. Because of this, the permissions are tied to the group’s ownership.

At the moment, only the Group Owner has the rights to delete plans within that group. As you’re not listed as an owner, Planner won’t allow you to delete it from your end.

To proceed, you can reach out to the Group Owner of the plan and ask them to delete the plan for you.

However, I understand this behavior is inconvenience for shared work environment and it's in need a revision. You can suggest an innovative suggestion for the development team. I believe this is an important feature for many users, and your feedback can help prioritize it. Please share your feedback directly with the Planner team by submitting your feedback directly to Planner · Community , where Microsoft product development team can know your requirements and ideas for product improvements. The team actively monitors user input, and many improvements have been made based on community suggestions.

    Hi @Jackie Johnson,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A Forum.
Since you are using Planner within Microsoft Teams (the Tasks by Planner and To Do app), the behavior you’re seeing where only “Copy link to plan” is available is expected and by design.

When working with Planner inside Microsoft Teams:

    • The Teams interface does not provide an option to delete Planner plans.
    • Plan deletion is controlled by Microsoft 365 Group ownership, and The Planner web application, not the Teams UI.

If you only see “Copy link to plan”, one or more of the following conditions applies:

    1. You are not a Microsoft 365 Group owner

Only Group Owners can delete a Planner plan, even if they originally created it. If you are listed as a member, the delete option will not appear in Teams or Planner.

    1. The plan is a personal plan created in Teams

Some plans created through Tasks by Planner and To Do are treated as personal plans. Personal plans cannot be deleted; they can only be left, which is why the delete option is not shown.

To delete a Planner plan created in Teams, you can try the following steps:

Step 1: Open Planner in a web browser

Plan deletion must be done from the Planner web app.

Go to: https://tasks.office.com Sign in with the same account you use in Teams.

    Step 2: Open the plan

Locate and open the same plan you see in Microsoft Teams.

    Step 3: Verify your permissions

    Open Plan settings
    User's image

    • If you see “Delete this plan”, you are a Group Owner and can delete it.
    • If you do not see this option, you are not a Group Owner.

Only Group Owners can delete plans. Leave the plan if it is a personal plan, which will remove it from your view.

    User's image

For personal plans, if the plan displays a purple thumbnail with a grid in Planner, this indicates that it was created in a separate service now known as Microsoft To Do. In this case, Planner is simply displaying items that originate as Lists in To Do.

To remove these plans from Planner, you need to delete the corresponding list directly in Microsoft To Do. Open the list in To Do, select the three‑dot (More options) menu, and delete the list, following steps similar to deleting a plan in Planner.

Afterward, return to Planner and refresh My Plans. The removed plan should no longer appear.

To delete a plan in Microsoft Planner, you need to ensure that there are no tasks or other users associated with the plan. If the plan you created is not allowing you to delete it, it may be because it is being referenced by other tasks or users. Here are the steps you can follow:

    1. Check for Tasks: Ensure that there are no tasks associated with the plan. If there are, you may need to delete those tasks first.
    2. Permissions: Make sure you have the necessary permissions to delete the plan. If you are not the owner or if the plan is shared with others, you might not have the option to delete it.
    3. Use the Admin Portal: If you are an admin, you can go to the administrator portal, navigate to the plans section, and attempt to delete the plan from there.
    4. No Offers or Subscriptions: If the plan is linked to any offers or subscriptions, you will need to remove those links before you can delete the plan.

If you still cannot delete the plan, consider reaching out to your IT administrator for further assistance.
