Had two 365 accounts with different emails - one for business and one personal. Cancelled business account but need to change login/email for personal account - the one I want too use was previously attached to business account.

Is your business account using a custom domain email address? If so, you actually cannot add it as alias to a personal account, it is not supported.
Additional info - business account still active until 3/10 so won't let me add business email to personal account.
