I purchased a new laptop with Windows Home on it. I have a laptop with Microsoft Pro on it. I want to swap the licenses. I have the product keys for each and can see how to upgrade the new laptop with Windows Pro but can't figure out how to add the Windows Home license to the old laptop without resetting and losing everything. Is it possible to make the swap cleanly?

    Hello Adriene Williams,

You can upgrade the new laptop from Windows 11 Home to Pro using the Pro product key directly, but the reverse path which moving the Home license to the old laptop is not a clean swap. Microsoft licensing does not support “downgrading” an installed Pro edition to Home without reinstalling, because the edition change requires replacing system components. That’s why you cannot simply enter the Home key on a Pro installation and expect it to convert; the activation service will reject it.

If you want the old laptop to use the Home license, the supported method is to perform a clean installation of Windows 11 Home using the Home key during setup. This ensures the edition is correctly aligned with the license. There is no in‑place downgrade path from Pro to Home. If you do not want to lose data, you would need to back up files and reinstall Home, then restore your data afterward.

In short, upgrading Home to Pro is straightforward with the Pro key, but moving back from Pro to Home requires a reinstall. Microsoft does not provide a supported downgrade mechanism.

I hope you've found something useful here. If it helps you get more insight into the issue, it's appreciated to accept the answer. Should you have more questions, feel free to leave a message. Have a nice day!

To swap the Microsoft Pro license from your old laptop to your new laptop with Windows Home, you can follow these steps:

    1. Deactivate the Windows Pro License on the Old Laptop:
      • Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
      • Use the command slmgr.vbs /upk to uninstall the product key from the old laptop. This will deactivate the Windows Pro license.
    2. Activate Windows Pro on the New Laptop:
      • On your new laptop, open Command Prompt as an administrator again.
      • Use the command slmgr.vbs /ipk <your_pro_product_key> to enter the Windows Pro product key.
      • Then, run slmgr.vbs /ato to activate Windows Pro.
    3. Install Windows Home on the Old Laptop:
      • On the old laptop, you can enter the Windows Home product key by going to Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
      • Click on "Change product key" and enter your Windows Home product key.
      • Follow the prompts to complete the activation.

This process should allow you to swap the licenses without needing to reset or lose data on either laptop. Make sure to back up your important files before proceeding, just in case anything goes wrong during the activation process.
