Microsoft Support Request — Duplicate Work/School Identity Attached to Personal Account

Hello,

I need assistance with an issue involving my personal Microsoft account.

On my iPhone, whenever I sign in to Microsoft Teams, the Microsoft Authenticator app automatically creates a Work or School account that is a duplicate of my personal account email. This only happens on iOS — my Mac and iPad work normally.

I have confirmed the following:

  • I only have a personal Microsoft account (MSA), not a work/school account.
  • I have no organisations listed in my Microsoft account.
  • I have no Azure AD / Entra ID tenant associated with my email.
  • I do not have any device management, MDM profiles, or SSO configuration on my iPhone.
  • The issue persists across reinstalling Authenticator and Teams, clearing all profiles inside both apps, and restarting the device.

Based on this behavior, it appears that my email address may have a hidden, orphaned, or legacy Work/School identity in Entra ID that is not visible to me but is being detected by Microsoft Authenticator on iOS.

This is causing the Authenticator app to automatically create a Work/School account entry every time Teams triggers authentication, even though my account is personal-only.

Request: Please check if my email address has a hidden, orphaned, unmanaged, or residual Work/School (Entra ID) identity attached to it, and if so, kindly remove or clean up this identity on your side.

This issue cannot be resolved on my device and requires backend correction of the identity records linked to my email address.

Thank you.

It seems that the issue you are experiencing with the Microsoft Authenticator app creating a duplicate Work or School account entry for your personal Microsoft account may be related to how Microsoft accounts and work/school accounts interact, especially if there is a legacy or orphaned identity associated with your email address.

While I cannot directly check or modify backend identity records, I recommend the following steps to address the issue:

    1. Contact Microsoft Support: Since this issue may require backend assistance, reaching out to Microsoft Support directly would be the best course of action. They can investigate whether there is any hidden or orphaned Work/School identity linked to your personal account.
    2. Check for Account Overlap: Ensure that your personal Microsoft account is not inadvertently linked to any organization or Azure AD tenant. Sometimes, even if you don’t see any organizations listed, there may be underlying configurations that need to be addressed.
    3. Use Different Authentication Methods: If possible, consider using alternative authentication methods temporarily until the issue is resolved, such as using a different device or browser for Teams.

These steps should help you in resolving the issue with the duplicate account entries in the Authenticator app.
