Hi everyone,

IE Mode has suddenly stopped working in Microsoft Edge across multiple Windows 10/11 devices.

We are getting this issue below.

"To open this page in IE mode, reinstall Microsoft Edge with admin privileges"

This is impacting legacy applications that rely on Trident/IE11 rendering.

Symptoms:

  • Even when enabled under Settings → Default browser, the mode does not activate

Devices affected:

  • Windows 11 PCs
  • Windows 10 PCs
  • Both domain‑joined and non‑managed personal devices
  • Multiple different Edge versions

Troubleshooting already tried:

  • Enabled Allow sites to be reloaded in IE Mode (Settings → Default Browser)
  • Restarted Edge and Windows
  • Confirmed policies aren’t blocking IE Mode
  • Checked whether the device reports “Managed by your organization”
  • Verified that Windows Optional Feature (IE components) is still installed
  • Updated Edge and Windows to latest builds
  • Reset Microsoft Edge settings Questions
  1. Has anyone else recently seen IE Mode stop working after an Edge update?
  2. Is there a confirmed Microsoft issue or bug related to IE Mode right now?
  3. Does IE Mode now require an Enterprise Site List for all usage?
  4. Is there any workaround to temporarily restore IE Mode for legacy applications?

Any help would be greatly appreciated — this is currently blocking access to several critical legacy systems.

Thank you!

If IE Mode has stopped working in Microsoft Edge and you are encountering the error message "To open this page in IE mode, reinstall Microsoft Edge with admin privileges," there are several troubleshooting steps and considerations you can explore:

    1. Check for Required Windows Updates: Ensure that all required Windows updates are installed. The prerequisites for IE Mode include specific updates for Windows 10 and Windows 11. If these updates are not installed, IE Mode may not function correctly.
    2. Reinstall Microsoft Edge: If you see the error message, it may indicate that Microsoft Edge is not installed with the necessary administrator privileges. You can try reinstalling Microsoft Edge with admin privileges to resolve this issue. Use the command installer.exe --system-level to install Edge at the system level.
    3. Verify Internet Explorer 11: Ensure that Internet Explorer 11 is enabled in Windows Features. If it is disabled, enable it and restart your device.
    4. Group Policy Settings: Confirm that the policies related to IE Mode are correctly configured and not blocking access. You can check the Group Policy settings to ensure that IE Mode is enabled.
    5. Use the Compatibility Tab: You can access diagnostic information through the Microsoft Edge Compatibility tab by navigating to edge://compat/iediagnostic. This may provide insights into what might be causing the issue.
    6. Enterprise Site List: While IE Mode does not necessarily require an Enterprise Site List for all usage, it is recommended for managing legacy applications effectively. If you have not set up an Enterprise Site List, consider doing so to improve compatibility.
    7. Workaround: If you need a temporary workaround, you can try using the IEChooser tool to open Internet Explorer DevTools for debugging purposes. This can help you troubleshoot specific issues with legacy applications.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, you may want to reach out to Microsoft support or consult the Microsoft documentation for further assistance.
