Outlook.com search ignores folder filter (in:inbox and Current folder not respected)

Outlook.com previously allowed strict folder-level search by selecting a specific folder such as Inbox before running a query.

That behavior no longer appears to work reliably.

Even when:

  • Selecting "Current folder"
  • Navigating directly inside Inbox before searching
  • Using operators such as in:inbox or folder:Inbox

Search results still include items from other folders (for example Sent Items).

This suggests that folder scoping is no longer applied at query level and may be overridden by Microsoft Search ranking.

This is a regression compared to previous Outlook.com behavior and significantly impacts deterministic workflows.

Has this behavior changed by design?

Is strict folder-level search being restored?

There is no Advanced Query Syntax for "in folder". (We all wish there was)

In my experience, both New Outlook for Windows and New Outlook Web Search will show results from any folder, if it can't find anything in the Current folder/Specified folder.

e.g. I have an email in my Inbox that contains a unique string:

    User's image

If I search "All" or only the Inbox, all good. It only gets one hit.

    User's image

But if I tell it to only Search the Archive folder, since there are no matches in Archive, it shows the item from the Inbox

    User's image

Not great. But that's how it works.

    Dear NJO,

Thank you for posting your question to the Microsoft Q&A.

That is an excellent observation regarding the specific behavior of folder-level search in the current Outlook.com environment.

At this time, Microsoft hasn’t published documentation confirming this as an intentional design change for Outlook.com or admitted it is a regression. However, to help you get closer to the strict folder-level search you are looking for, I suggest we try adjusting how Outlook groups these indexable objects.

Here are the steps you can try to isolate your search results:

    Step 1: Disable Conversation View

Since the search engine is indexing "Conversations," breaking them back down into individual messages often restores strict folder scoping.

    1. Go to Settings (Gear icon) > Mail > Layout.
    2. Under Message organization, select Do not group messages (instead of "Group into conversations").
    3. Click Save.
    4. Retry your search using your preferred operator: in:inbox [query].

Step 2: Use the "Search Options" Modal

If you prefer to keep Conversation View on, you can force a hard filter using the advanced interface.

    1. Click inside the Search Box at the top.
    2. Click the Filter icon (three horizontal lines) on the right side of the search bar.
    3. In the Search in dropdown, explicitly select Inbox (or the specific folder you need).
    4. Run the search.

Furthermore, if you find that this function is hindering your specific workflow, I highly encourage you to raise it to the Feedback Hub. Microsoft is actively listening to user experiences to refine these architectural shifts, so the more users request strict folder adherence, the more likely it is to be prioritized in future updates.

I hope this explanation clarifies the behavior shift and helps you get your search results back in order. Please let me know if these steps work for you.
