Locked Out of Microsoft 365 Global Admin Due to Lost MFA — Need Assistance

I am the global admin, and I have lost my phone that had the authenticator on it. I am the only global admin on the account, and I need some assistance regaining access to this 365 admin portal. I have sat on hold for 4.5 hours Monday. I spoke with someone yesterday that said they were escalating this to the Data Protection Team. I have not heard from this team yet.

This is impacting the entire small business emails. I know that I can reset my password by sending a request to 1 of 2 other emails that I do have access to. Is there a way that the data protection team can add those emails that are already in the system to the MFA options?

    Hi @Doug Harvey

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum. I’m really sorry to hear about the situation you’re dealing with.

You’ve taken the correct steps by contacting Microsoft Support and having your case escalated to the Data Protection Team (DPT). They are the only team authorized to help when the sole Global Admin loses access and there are no alternative MFA methods available. I know the waiting time can feel long, and I’m sorry you haven’t heard back yet, the DPT often handles sensitive account‑recovery cases, and response times can be slower when they’re experiencing a high workload.

Regarding your question about whether the Data Protection Team can add the additional email addresses already associated with your account as MFA options, as a forum moderator, I don’t have visibility into the internal verification steps the DPT follows, and I can’t confirm what specific methods they may use during your identity verification process. Those decisions are handled directly by the Data Protection Team to ensure account security and compliance.

That said, if your case has already been successfully created, could you please share your case ID with me via private message? This will allow me to take a closer look at the status and make sure it’s progressing normally. To access private messages, click the banner at the top of the page (as shown in the screenshot below).

User's image Please know that I don’t have any ability to access or make changes to user accounts, including actions like signing you in, resetting your password, or modifying your admin access.

However, I’ll do my very best to check the current situation on your case and provide any next steps or updates that I’m able to share from my side.

Thank you sincerely for your patience and understanding during this process.

To regain access to your Microsoft 365 admin portal after losing your phone with the Microsoft Authenticator app, you will need to work with the Data Protection team, especially since you are the only global admin on the account. Here are some steps you can consider:

    1. Contact Microsoft Support Again: Since you have already escalated your issue, it may be beneficial to follow up with Microsoft Support to check on the status of your request to the Data Protection team. You can emphasize the urgency of your situation, as it is impacting your business operations.
    2. Request MFA Reset: The Data Protection team can assist in resetting your Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) settings. They may be able to add your alternative email addresses as MFA options, allowing you to regain access to your account.
    3. Provide Necessary Information: When contacting support, be prepared to provide any necessary information to verify your identity and ownership of the account, such as your business details and any other verification methods you have.
    4. Consider Temporary Solutions: If you are unable to reach the Data Protection team promptly, you might consider creating a temporary account (trial tenant) to submit a support ticket on behalf of your original tenant.

It's crucial to maintain communication with Microsoft Support to ensure your request is being processed efficiently.
