Old OneDrive connected folder on C: drive shows files ALL with gray "X" - are those files gone?

I don't remember the details but, at some point, I removed and reinstalled OneDrive from my Windows 10 laptop. In setting it back up, I somehow used a Windows user name that I didn't intend to, I guess, so there's a C:\Users folder with a name I don't use. ALL of the files in the OneDrive folders under that User Profile have a gray "x" on them.

I subsequently successfully set up OneDrive using the intended user name, and have been using it for a couple of years that way.

I just want to make sure that those "gray x" icons don't work, and those files have been replaced or removed, most likely, so that it is "safe" to delete those file icons on my C: drive in the wrong UserProfile folders.

    Hi,

Thanks for reaching out! If you’re unsure about deleting files in OneDrive, it’s always a good idea to double-check first. Here’s a simple way to do it safely:

    1.Check the file sizes

    • Right‑click the file > Properties
    • If it’s 0 bytes > it’s just a placeholder

If it has a normal size but won’t open > it’s likely orphaned and not actively used by OneDrive

2.Make sure your current OneDrive is syncing properly

Right‑click the OneDrive icon in the taskbar > Settings > Account

You should see only your active account listed

    3.Verify the folder path

    • Your active OneDrive folder usually looks like: C:\Users<YourRealUserName>\OneDrive\
    • The old or inactive folder might look like: C:\Users<WrongUserName>\OneDrive\
    • Only the old/inactive folder is safe to delete

    4.Test the gray‑X files

    • Try opening one > it will probably give an error
    • This confirms it’s just a disconnected placeholder

Hope that these helps you out before deleting anything.

The gray "X" icons on files in OneDrive typically indicate that the files are not synced and are not available locally. This can happen if the OneDrive folder is disconnected from the library or if the files are in a user profile that is not currently active or intended for use. Since you mentioned that you set up OneDrive with a different user name and have been using it successfully for a couple of years, it is likely that those files in the old user profile are no longer relevant.

If you are certain that you do not need the files in that old user profile and they are not synced with your current OneDrive setup, it should be safe to delete those file icons from your C: drive. Just ensure that you have backed up any important data before proceeding with the deletion, as this action cannot be undone.
