A Microsoft offering that enables tracking of cloud usage and expenditures for Azure and other cloud providers.
Hello EK
Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Q&A platform.
- Azure Non‑Profit grants ($2,000 Azure Sponsorship) do NOT automatically apply to an existing Pay‑As‑You‑Go subscription. The grant must be explicitly activated from the Microsoft Nonprofit portal by the Primary Contact on the grant, and during activation you must choose the correct billing profile / subscription scope.
- If the grant is not activated, Azure will continue charging the credit card on file. This is expected behavior until the sponsorship credit is successfully activated and attached to the subscription.
- Only the account listed as the “Primary Contact” on the Azure grant can activate or apply it. Even Global Admins or Subscription Owners cannot apply the credit unless they are that primary contact.
Please refer below document for more details:

As a resolution, I would suggest trying below workarounds:
Step 1: Verify grant activation status
Sign in with the same email that received the “Azure grant has been added” email and go to: https://nonprofit.microsoft.com and Navigate to Offers / Nonprofit grants → locate Azure $2,000 Sponsorship.
- If you see “Activate”, the grant has not been applied yet.
- If you see “Active”, click into it and confirm which billing profile/subscription it’s attached to.
This activation step is mandatory per Microsoft’s official guidance.
Step 2: Confirm the subscription type in Azure Portal:
Go to Azure Portal → Cost Management + Billing → Subscriptions.
- If your subscription shows Pay‑As‑You‑Go, the grant is not applied.
- A nonprofit grant creates or converts to an Azure Sponsorship subscription.
Microsoft confirms that sponsorship credits only apply under the correct billing scope and subscription type.
Step 3: Check credit balance (after activation):
Once activated correctly, you can verify credits here:
- Azure Portal → Billing → Payment methods → Azure credits, or
- For legacy sponsorships: https://www.microsoftazuresponsorships.com
If the balance is $0, the credit is still not applied.
- Disputing charges does not apply the grant retroactively.
- Charges stop only after the Azure Sponsorship is successfully activated and linked.
- Canceling the subscription before activation can permanently block applying the grant to that tenant.
Note: If you encounter errors or are unsure which benefits apply to you, submit a support request through our Contact Us form.
As per the steps shared above Azure Request to Billing team has been created and an internal Sponsorship Team was engaged to initiate the credit adjustment for specific invoice IDs.
The root cause was a billing issue where the Azure Sponsorship credit, which was approved for $2,000 USD valid until November 5th, 2026, was not properly applied to cover the customer's charges. This resulted in paid and unbilled charges being incorrectly billed to the customer's credit card despite the non-profit grant coverage.
The support team engaged the internal Sponsorship Team to initiate a credit adjustment covering the relevant invoices and unbilled charges. A refund of $292.21 was processed back to the customer's American Express card after the credit adjustment. The customer was informed of the refund and the subscription cancellation date. The issue was confirmed resolved with the refund processed and the customer acknowledged receipt of the credit adjustment.
We’re happy to continue assisting and work with you toward the right solution.
Thanks,
Suchitra.
