Can't view emails in Outlook

I downloaded and installed Outlook Classic today on a laptop I am working on for a client, then wasn't able to view his emails (just a few Microsoft support emails). Even when going to his Outlook account online I wasn't able to see any of his emails. Does anyone know how to fix this? Thanks.

    Hi Tom Perry

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A

As far as I know, the most probable cause is that the account was configured as POP3 on the new laptop, which by default downloads emails to the local device and deletes them from the server, explaining why the webmail is now empty.

Given this, I suggest you can try the below approach to see if it can help you:

    1) Fix “hidden mail” first: clear filters + check folders

You can do this step on both web and app:

    • In the Inbox, set Filter = All (not Unread / flagged / etc.).
    • If Focused Inbox is on, temporarily turn it off or check the other tab (messages can land there).
    • Check the folders: Junk Email, Deleted Items, Archive and move items back to Inbox if found.

    2) Audit mailbox rules / Sweep / junk settings

    • Go to Settings → Mail → Rules and remove/disable anything that moves/deletes incoming mail.
    • Also review Junk email settings (blocked senders / aggressive filtering can misroute messages).

    3) Validate account health: recent sign-in activity and rule out local client blockers

    A. Security / account activity check

Review Recent sign-in activity for the Microsoft account (look for unknown locations/devices).

    B. If mail actually exists on the server but Classic Outlook doesn’t show it

    • Start Classic Outlook in Safe Mode (Outlook.exe /safe) to rule out add-ins.
    • Confirm Work Offline isn’t enabled (Send/Receive tab).

    4) Verify Account Type:

    • In Outlook Classic, go to File > Account Settings > Account Settings.
    • Check the "Type" column.

If it says POP/POP3, the missing emails are stored locally in the PST file on that specific laptop. They are no longer on the server and you should back up this data immediately before making any changes.

To fix this for the future, you will need to switch the account to IMAP or Exchange, which keeps emails synchronized on the server.

You can try the above workaround method, if the problem still persists, kindly let me know in the comments for further support.

Unfortunately, I still can't see the emails on Outlook, or on Outlook online via Exchange. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.
