Hello, I could do with some help fixing a sign in error. I had to send my laptop in to get fixed last month where it got a new motherboard, since then I've not been able to sign into my Edge profile. It gives me the following error code

Message: The credential is invalid. Unexpected sub status (6008).

Tag: 657rx

Code: 2150171662

I've looked it up and apparently this can happen sometimes with a new motherboard when stored info doesn't match properly, I'm not sure how exactly to fix this though. It only affects my work profile and not my personal. It also only affects Microsoft Edge and not other applications like Teams.

I've seen some stuff about Credential Manager but I can't find the relevant thing in there.

    Hi,

Thank you for sharing your question. Okay, so this error popped up right after you got your laptop's motherboard replaced, and it's only messing with Edge, not stuff like Teams. I am here to help.

Basically, this invalid credential thing with the sub status (6008) usually shows up when your laptop's trying to use old or messed-up login info. This often happens after big hardware changes, like when you replace a motherboard. Microsoft's help pages say that clearing out the old login stuff and reconnecting to your work account should fix it.

I suggest sign out of all Microsoft apps, trash the old login data, and then reconnect your work account. Tech support folks say to clear the AAD Broker Plugin cache, get rid of Microsoft logins in the Credential Manager, and disconnect/re-add your work account under Settings > Accounts > Access work or school. This should reset things so Edge can log in properly again.

Before I give you the exact steps for your situation, are you logged into Windows with your personal account or the same work account that's giving Edge trouble?

Let me know if you have any questions or if anything else comes up I'm here to help get you back into Edge.

    I hope this helps.

    Best Regards,

    Noel

It sounds like you're experiencing a sign-in issue with your Microsoft Edge profile after your laptop's motherboard was replaced. The error code you mentioned, "The credential is invalid. Unexpected sub status (6008)," typically indicates a mismatch between the stored credentials and the current system configuration, which can happen after significant hardware changes.

Here are some steps you can take to resolve this issue:

    1. Check Your Profile: Ensure that you are trying to sign in with the correct account associated with your work profile. If you have multiple profiles, switch to the correct one.
    2. Reset Your Edge Profile: You can try resetting your Edge profile. To do this, go to Settings > Profiles > Sync and look for options to reset or re-sync your data.
    3. Clear Cached Credentials: Since you mentioned Credential Manager, you can check there to see if there are any stored credentials related to your work profile that may need to be cleared or updated. Open Credential Manager from the Control Panel, and look under both the "Web Credentials" and "Windows Credentials" sections.
    4. Create a New Profile: If the issue persists, consider creating a new work profile in Edge. You can do this by selecting Other profiles and then Set up a new work profile. This may help bypass the issue with the existing profile.
    5. Reinstall Edge: As a last resort, you may want to uninstall and then reinstall Microsoft Edge to ensure that all components are properly configured.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, you may need to contact Microsoft support for further assistance.
