I just recently bought this laptop first hand and windows was pre installed so there shouldn't be any issues but i'm facing this problem where when i play any videos on any local player like Windows media player or Movies & TV the video display black screen while the audio continues and i can hear it. Sometimes it'll give me an error like codec missing with this error 0x8000ffff but mostly its just the audio playing with the video. I tried vlc but same black screen issue with working audio.

    Hi Abdulrehman Rehan,
Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum. I'm happy to help.

Regarding your information, it seems you have problem with GPU driver.

Did you install GPU driver on your system? If it was not installed, please install GPU driver for integrated GPU and external GPU if your computer has it.

With VLC, if the problem persists, please try changing output setting. Open VLC > Tools > Preferences > Video > from Output dropdown > switch it to another mode to see if it can help.

The last thing you want to try is disabling hardware acceleration. Please note that disabling this will affect video playback performance. Open VLC > Tools > Preferences > Input / Codecs > Hardware-accelerated decoding > Disable.

I hope that above information is helpful to you. If you have any updates, please feel free to let me know.

Hi, I'm Bernard, a fellow Windows user. I'm happy to help!

Based on your inputs, it seems that the video itself is not fully supported by the PC, either the video has a different format, or there is an issue. Have you tried to play the video on a different PC just to check? If it's working fine on another PC, kindly follow the steps provided by Q&A Assist. If the issue persists, I suggest doing an in-place upgrade, which will update the device to the latest version and repair all issues without deleting any files.

It sounds like you're experiencing a codec issue with Windows Media Player or Movies & TV, which is causing the video to display a black screen while the audio plays. This can happen if the required video codec is not installed on your computer.

To resolve this issue, you can try the following steps:

    1. Configure Windows Media Player to download codecs automatically:
    • Open Windows Media Player.
    • Go to the Tools menu and select Options.
    • In the Player tab, check the box for Download codecs automatically and click OK.
    • Try playing the video again. If prompted to install a codec, select Install.
    1. Check for installed codecs:
    • Right-click on the video file in the Now Playing area and select Properties.
    • In the File tab, note the codecs specified in the Audio codec and Video codec areas.
    • If no video codec is specified, you may need to install the required codec.
    1. Obtain the codec from a third-party vendor if necessary, especially if the automatic download does not resolve the issue.

If these steps do not resolve the problem, consider checking for any updates for your media players or your Windows operating system that might address compatibility issues.
