A new motherboard was installed on my fairly new laptop. It is telling me that Windows is not activated. I just bought Windows 11 again but cannot find the product key or how to install it. It's not listed on the confirmation email or in my order history. How do I solve this?

Thank you for letting me know.

The error 0x80072EE7 means your PC is having trouble connecting to Microsoft’s activation servers. This is usually caused by DNS issues, firewall restrictions, VPNs, security software, or an unstable internet connection.

Let’s try this step by step:

    1. Turn off VPN or security software (if any)
    • If you’re using a VPN or third-party antivirus/firewall, please disable it temporarily and try activating again.
    1. Flush the DNS cache:
    • Press Start and search for CMD.
    • Right-click on Command Prompt and select “Run as administrator”.
    • In the Command Prompt, type the following commands one by one, pressing Enter after each and wait:

    ipconfig /flushdns

    ipconfig /release

    ipconfig /renew

    netsh winsock reset

    • Restart your PC and check if the issue persists.

Let me know how it goes.

Hi, I'm John! I will help you with this.

First, if Windows was previously activated using your Microsoft account, you may not need a product key.

Since you’ve now purchased a Windows 11 license, let’s continue with that.

If you bought it from the Microsoft Store, Microsoft usually does not provide a visible product key. Instead, it’s linked to your Microsoft account as a digital license, which is why it won’t appear in the confirmation email or order history.

    Please try this first:

    • Sign in to your PC using the same Microsoft account you used to buy Windows.
    • Go to Settings > System > Activation.
    • Click Troubleshoot, then select I changed hardware on this device recently.
    • Sign in when prompted and choose your device from the list.

    This should reactivate Windows automatically.

I did all of the steps suggested by the AI response and none of it worked unless I'm doing something wrong.

If you have installed a new motherboard and are facing activation issues with Windows 11, there are a few steps you can take to resolve this. Since you mentioned that you cannot find your product key in the confirmation email or your order history, here are some suggestions:

    1. Check Your Microsoft Account: If your Windows 11 was previously activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account, signing in with that same account on your new installation may automatically reactivate Windows without needing to enter a product key.
    2. Retrieve Product Key from Old Installation: If you have access to the old installation (or the old drive), you can retrieve the product key using a command in an elevated Command Prompt or by using third-party key-finder utilities that can read the registry hive from the old drive.
    3. Contact Microsoft Support: If you still cannot find the product key, you may need to contact Microsoft support. They can help you retrieve your digital license or provide guidance on reactivating Windows on your new hardware.
    4. Use Activation Troubleshooter: If you haven't already, try using the Activation Troubleshooter in Windows settings. This may help in resolving the activation issue after a hardware change.

By following these steps, you should be able to resolve the activation issue with your Windows 11 installation.
