Hi, I'm John! I will help you with this.

To help narrow down the issue:

    1. May I know what troubleshooting steps have you already taken? This will help me avoid recommending them again.
    2. Are you currently running Windows 11?

In the meantime, if you haven’t already:

I recommend starting with a repair of Office, it often clears up problems like this. Here’s Microsoft’s step-by-step guide: "Repair an Office application" https://support.microsoft.com/office/repair-an-office-application-7821d4b6-7c1d-4205-aa0e-a6b40c5bb88b#id0ebd=windows_11

If the issue persists, try to uninstall and reinstall the Office app. Here’s how:

    • Open the Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
    • Look for any version of Microsoft Office or Office apps, right-click, then choose Uninstall. Please uninstall all Office apps.
    • Once that’s done, restart your computer just to be safe.

    Then, to reinstall Microsoft Office:

    • Go to https://account.microsoft.com/services
    • Sign in using the same Microsoft account linked to your subscription.
    • Find Microsoft Office or 365 subscription you own and click the "Install" button next to it.
    • That will download the installer for the Office apps, just run it and follow the steps.

If the issue persists, please provide more details by answering my questions.

    Regards,

    John J.D.

If Microsoft Word crashes when you try to search for a file, it may be due to issues with the application itself or corrupted files. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially fix the issue:

    1. Repair Office: Exit all Office applications, go to Installed Apps in Windows Settings, find your Office product, and start an Online Repair. This can resolve many issues related to application crashes.
    2. Check for Updates: Ensure that your Microsoft Office is up to date, as updates often contain fixes for bugs and issues.
    3. Disable Add-ins: Sometimes, third-party add-ins can cause Word to crash. Start Word in safe mode by holding the Ctrl key while opening Word, and see if the issue persists. If it works in safe mode, consider disabling or removing add-ins.
    4. Reset Word Settings: You can reset Word to its default settings by using the /a switch. Close Word, open the Run dialog (Windows Key + R), type winword.exe /a, and press Enter. This will start Word without any add-ins or custom settings.
    5. Check File Permissions: Ensure that you have the necessary permissions to access the files you are trying to open.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, you may need to look into more specific troubleshooting based on any error messages you receive or consider reinstalling Office if the problem persists.
