    Hi Russell,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A forum and explaining what’s been happening with your Surface. I know how frustrating it is when a device feels slow or unresponsive, especially when there aren’t any clear error messages.Let’s walk through a few additional steps together. These are common causes that usually help narrow things down quickly:

Step 1: Make sure the device isn’t being limited by power settings

Sometimes Surface will reduce performance to save power, even when it’s plugged in.

    • Open Settings > System > Power & battery
    • Under Power mode, select Best performance
    • Keep the device plugged in while testing

This ensures the CPU can run at full speed and isn’t being artificially limited.

Step 2: Check the device health using the Surface app

Microsoft provides a built‑in app specifically for Surface devices that checks firmware, drivers, and overall health.

    • Open the Surface app (install it from the Microsoft Store if it’s not already there)
    • Go to Help & support
    • Review any recommended updates or alerts and apply them

Outdated firmware or drivers can cause slow performance even when everything else looks normal.

Step 3: Run the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit

This tool goes a bit deeper than Windows Update and can catch issues that aren’t obvious.

    • Search for Surface Diagnostic Toolkit in the Start menu (or install it from the Microsoft Store)
    • Run the tool and follow the on‑screen steps
    • Let it complete all recommended checks

It’s designed specifically for Surface hardware and often resolves performance issues automatically.

Step 4: Allow the device to cool and restart

Surface devices will slow themselves down if they detect heat or power‑related conditions, even if the device doesn’t feel extremely hot.

    • Shut the device down completely
    • Place it on a flat, hard surface with good airflow
    • Leave it powered off for about 10–15 minutes

After you’ve gone through these steps, please let me know if you notice any improvement in performance and feel free to reach out if you need any further assistance. I'm here to help.

If your Windows Surface Pro 7+ is running sluggishly, there are several troubleshooting steps you can take to improve its performance:

    1. Turn Off Visual Effects: Disabling certain visual effects can speed up your device. You can adjust these settings by searching for "Performance Information and Tools" and selecting "Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows." From there, you can choose to adjust for best performance or let Windows choose what's best for your computer.
    2. Run Fewer Programs: Try to limit the number of programs you have open at the same time. Running multiple applications and browser windows can overwhelm your device's resources.
    3. Use ReadyBoost: If you have a USB flash drive or memory card, you can use ReadyBoost to enhance performance by utilizing additional storage space.
    4. Adjust Indexing Options: If searches are slow, consider narrowing the indexing options to focus on the files and folders you use most frequently.
    5. Check Startup Programs: Too many startup applications can slow down boot time. Use Task Manager to view and disable unnecessary startup items.
    6. Clean Up Disk Errors: Use the Check Disk program to identify and fix errors on your hard drive, which can also improve performance.
    7. Update Drivers and Windows: Ensure that your device has the latest updates installed, as these can include performance improvements and bug fixes.

By following these steps, you should be able to identify and resolve the issues causing your Surface Pro 7+ to run slowly.
