Access OneDrive account associated with inactive school email

I set up my OneDrive account associated with a Microsoft account that was tied to an email address that is no longer in service. When I try to log in to the Microsoft account associated with that email, it takes me to the login page of my old university (the email was an alumni email address), but since the university shut down the email account, I cannot use the university’s log in page to connect to my One Drive account and cannot access my files. How can I go about resolving this, as my computer was just damaged and the hard drive contents are only in the One Drive account in the cloud, which I can’t log in to.

    Dear @Paul Franciosa,

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A.

I’m very sorry that you’re facing this situation, especially given that your computer was damaged and your files are stored only in OneDrive.

Based on your description, I’d like to confirm that the OneDrive you’re trying to access is associated with a work or school (education) account, not a personal Microsoft account. This is why when you attempt to sign in, you are redirected to your former university’s sign‑in page. That behavior is expected for accounts managed by an educational organization through Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Entra ID.

Please understand that Microsoft Q&A moderators and community members don’t have access to backend systems and aren’t able to restore access, reset credentials, or convert a work/school OneDrive account into a personal Microsoft account. Additionally, Microsoft Support can’t override or bypass an organization’s sign‑in system or release data from a university‑managed tenant, as the data is owned and controlled by the institution.

In this scenario, the only party that can help recover access or retrieve your OneDrive data is your former university. I strongly recommend contacting the university’s IT department or alumni services as soon as possible and explaining that you need access to your OneDrive data due to data loss on your local device. Depending on their retention policies and how long ago the account was disabled, they may be able to temporarily re‑enable the account or export your files on your behalf.

I truly hope the information above helps clarify why this is happening and points you toward the right next step. I understand how stressful this situation can be, and I sincerely hope your university is able to assist you in recovering your files.

    Warm regards,

To resolve the issue of accessing your OneDrive account associated with an inactive school email, you can try the following steps:

    1. Account Recovery: Visit the Microsoft account recovery page. You may be able to recover your account by providing any alternate email addresses or phone numbers associated with the account.
    2. Contact University Support: If your alumni email was managed by the university, consider reaching out to their IT department or alumni services. They may have procedures in place for recovering access to accounts or files.
    3. Microsoft Support: If the above options do not work, contact Microsoft Support directly for assistance. Explain your situation clearly, and they may be able to help you regain access to your OneDrive files.
    4. Check for Other Accounts: Ensure that you are not trying to log in with a different Microsoft account that may also be linked to OneDrive. Sometimes, users have multiple accounts that can lead to confusion.
    5. Backup Options: If you regain access, consider downloading your files to a local drive or linking your OneDrive to a different, active email account for future use.

These steps should help you in attempting to regain access to your OneDrive files.
