What happened to all the dialog steps to put this question in the right place?

I purchased a license to Windows 11 and it has been running since March of 2025.  A few days ago, Windows declared that I must activate Windows.  When I enter the same product key used in March 2025, it says the product key did not work.  The error code is 0xc004f050.

Why did it suddenly need to be activated?

Why did the license key in use for a year suddenly become invalid?

What must be done to reactivate Windows?

Hello, thank you for your reply.

Your license is for Windows 11 Pro. Now we need to check whether your system is also the Pro edition. Activation is only possible if the versions match.

Press Win + R and type: winver

Please provide a screenshot so we can take a look. Thank you.

    Hello,

Where did you obtain this key? Could you provide the purchase order record for the key? Please press Win+R, enter slmgr.vbs -dlv, and then share a screenshot. Thank you.

This error usually indicates: the product key entered is invalid, does not match the current system version, or the activation information is missing. For example, if the key is for Windows 11 Home but the system is Windows 11 Pro, this error will occur.

Open Settings → System → About to check your Windows edition (Home / Pro) and confirm that your key corresponds to the same version.

The error code 0xc004f050 indicates that the Software Licensing Service reports that the product key is invalid. This can happen for several reasons:

    1. Changes in Hardware: If you have made significant hardware changes to your computer, such as replacing the motherboard, Windows may require reactivation as the digital license is tied to the hardware configuration.
    2. Expired License: If your license was a time-limited or subscription-based license, it may have expired, requiring reactivation.
    3. Incorrect Product Key: Ensure that you are entering the correct product key. Typos or using a key intended for a different version of Windows can lead to this error.

To reactivate Windows, you can try the following steps:

    • Check for Updates: Ensure that your system is fully updated, as sometimes updates can resolve activation issues.
    • Use the Activation Troubleshooter: Go to Settings > Update & Security > Activation and use the troubleshooter to resolve any issues.
    • Re-enter the Product Key: If you are confident that the product key is correct, try re-entering it.
    • Contact Microsoft Support: If the issue persists, contacting Microsoft Support may be necessary to resolve the activation problem.

By following these steps, you should be able to reactivate your Windows installation successfully.
