What happened to all the dialog steps to put this question in the right place?
I purchased a license to Windows 11 and it has been running since March of 2025. A few days ago, Windows declared that I must activate Windows. When I enter the same product key used in March 2025, it says the product key did not work. The error code is 0xc004f050.
Why did it suddenly need to be activated?
Why did the license key in use for a year suddenly become invalid?
What must be done to reactivate Windows?

Where did you buy the key for Windows 11. If you have a key the get ShowKeyPlus from the windows Store and use the Check edition in the app. Does it confirm a Windows 10/11 licence (retail or OEM) and the same edition Home or Pro that you currently have installed.?

Your license is for Windows 11 Pro. Now we need to check whether your system is also the Pro edition. Activation is only possible if the versions match.

This error usually indicates: the product key entered is invalid, does not match the current system version, or the activation information is missing. For example, if the key is for Windows 11 Home but the system is Windows 11 Pro, this error will occur.
Open Settings → System → About to check your Windows edition (Home / Pro) and confirm that your key corresponds to the same version.
I purchased the license in March 2025 from FLIX, flixeasy. My computer has been running daily since then. Since then there have been no changes at all. The error just started popping up a few days ago. The order receipt for Windows states, in part:

The indicator is a barely visible notice in the bottom right hand corner. It is mostly transparent. As I write this it is not visible.
Pressed Win-R and entered slmgr.vbs -dlv, then OK I am a bit worried about the activation ID, but is looks like the result of a one-way encryption app. I will add the screen shot.
Why does Microsoft post that such the we cannot do a copy/past? That is rather crummy of them.

Although you have checked your invoice you need to verify the product key you have using the ShowKeyPlus app and entering the key at Check edition.
Your screenshot shows a generic product key that cannot be used for activation. This is often the case when a licence has been upgraded from Windows 7 or 8. Or a digital licence has been purchased from Microsoft.
Your purchase was from a 3rd party and has a product key. Please verify the key you have bought.
ShowKeyPlus was installed. The ShowKeyplus check edition section indicates a good key, but, while the purchase order shows Windows 11 the app shows Win 10. The Home option shows a different product key. It indicates Windows 11 Home, but I am running the professional.
Again, a point that seems very important to me. This has been running for the last year. Why would it now declare that it needs to be activated?
There is nothing wrong regarding Windows 10 or 11 shown as the OS licence. When Microsoft sell the licences now they are for Windows 10/11.
What is wrong is that you seem to have Home edition installed when you have a licence for Pro edition.
Type winver in Search and select the top result. Does that also show Home edition.? There should be no way to go from Pro to Home edition without a clean install. (I can't explain that)
The Home edition Installed key looks like a generic key from this list.
These cannot be used to activate windows as the statement in red suggests. So Home edition is not activated.
To upgrade from Home to Pro to use the licence you have for Pro you will need to make sure the device is offline. Enter the generic Pro key
VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T and follow any prompts to upgrade. Restart windows and go back online. You should then be able to activate using your licence. (assuming it isn't based on the Pro generic key)
Generic Pro key, never would have imagined such a thing exists. I am worried that doing that will totally mess up this computer. But will think on it and probably do it. Thank you for your time.
The process of using the generic Pro key to change from Home to Pro edition is well established.
It does look like the Home edition key I can make out is probably a generic key for Home edition as ShowKeyPlus shows an asterisk with a statement below Default key so at the moment you do not have Home activated.
During the process to upgrade to Pro after the prompt to Start the process it should take around 5 to 10 minutes.
If you are not using the Professional Edition, you can convert it to the Professional Edition using a key and then reactivate it.

When you buy from the windows Store it is a digital licence so no product key. The account used to buy the licence affectively acts as the product key.
You buy the licence for the device you are using and it should activate. So from your screenshot you have bought a Home edition licence and should have Home edition installed. The purchase will be shown in your account under purchase history.
