Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
Dear @Bharath Narayan,
Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft 365 Q&A forum. I completely understand the urgency of your situation. Being locked out of your company's Microsoft 365 administration because the only Global Administrator is a former employee is a critical business issue. You need to know exactly where to write to and what steps to take to regain control.
As a member of the community support team, I’m limited in my ability to access or make changes within your administrator account. For security and privacy reasons, only Microsoft’s dedicated support team has the necessary tools and authorization to assist with account-level issues such as resetting or troubleshooting deep within your account.
Based on official Microsoft support documentation and numerous cases like yours, here is the precise action plan to regain your Global Administrator access.
You cannot resolve this through standard sign-in pages or forum posts. You need to reach Microsoft's Data Protection Team the only department with the tools to verify your identity and restore admin access for a locked tenant.
Here is exactly where to write or call:
Option 1: Call Microsoft Support Directly
This is the most direct route. You need to speak to a live person who can create a service request for the Data Protection Team.
- Find your regional support number: Go to Customer service phone numbers - Microsoft Support Navigate the automated system (IVR) effectively: When you call, the automated system will ask questions. Use these exact keywords to be routed correctly:
- Problem: Authenticator
- Product: Office 365 for business
- Account Type: For companies
- Are you an administrator?: Yes
- Do you have another administrator? No. I am the only admin for my tenant.
- Do you need a service request? Yes. I need to create a ticket. Please send me directly to the Data Protection Team.
- Be prepared to verify ownership: The support agent will create a ticket for the Data Protection Team. Have these documents ready to prove you own the company and the tenant : Domain ownership proof: Your domain registrar's details (e.g., GoDaddy, Namecheap) or the ability to add a DNS TXT record provided by Microsoft. Business registration: Your official company registration documents. Billing information: A recent invoice or purchase order for your Microsoft 365 subscription. Your identification: A government-issued ID for yourself, as the company founder.
Option 2: Create a Temporary Trial Tenant (Workaround Method)
If you are unable to reach a live agent by phone, you can create a new, temporary Microsoft 365 trial account. This will give you access to the Microsoft 365 Admin Center, where you can open a support ticket .
- Sign up for a free trial: Go to Microsoft 365 Business Plans and Pricing | Microsoft 365 and sign up for a Business trial using a personal email address (not your company's locked domain) .
- Open a support ticket: Once the trial tenant is set up, log in to the admin center (admin.microsoft.com). Go to Support > Help and support, and create a new service request .
- Explain your situation clearly: In the ticket, state that you are the founder of Your Company Name and are completely locked out of your primary tenant (yourcompany.onmicrosoft.com) because the only Global Administrator is a former employee. Request that the ticket be escalated to the Data Protection Team for admin account recovery.
- Cancel the trial later: Once your original tenant access is restored, remember to cancel the trial subscription to avoid being charged.
As a community moderator, I, like others, do not have access to Microsoft's internal tools and cannot change anything on your account. Only the official Data Protection Team can perform this recovery.
I am confident that by following these steps specifically contacting the Data Protection Team via phone or a trial tenant ticket you will be able to verify your ownership and restore your administrative control. Please let me know if you have any other questions.
