Hi John Dix,
Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A forum.
When you’re trying to save a photo and the “Save as type” field suddenly appears blank, here are some checking steps that you can try:
1, Restart Windows Explorer
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, find Windows Explorer, and select Restart.
2, Reset corrupted Save As dialog settings
- Press Win + R, type
regedit> Enter - Go to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer - Rename these keys (right‑click → Rename):
- ComDlg32 → ComDlg32.OLD
- CIDOpen → CIDOpen.OLD
- CIDSave → CIDSave.OLD
- Close Registry Editor
- Restart your PC
In the meantime, as a temporary workaround, you can type the file extension manually (for example: photo.jpg) in the File name box, then select Save.
Let me know if you need further assistance, feel free to ask me by clicking "Add Comment" or "Add Answer" if you cannot add comment so your response will be visible. Thanks for your effort.
