When I go to save an image or a photo, the "save as type" line is blank. It used to have several options, such as jpeg, word doc, etc. How do I get this back so I can save stuff?

    Hi John Dix,

Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A forum.

When you’re trying to save a photo and the “Save as type” field suddenly appears blank, here are some checking steps that you can try:

    1, Restart Windows Explorer

    • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, find Windows Explorer, and select Restart.

2, Reset corrupted Save As dialog settings

    • Press Win + R, type regedit > Enter
    • Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer
    • Rename these keys (right‑click → Rename):
      • ComDlg32 → ComDlg32.OLD
      • CIDOpen → CIDOpen.OLD
      • CIDSave → CIDSave.OLD
      • Close Registry Editor
    • Restart your PC

In the meantime, as a temporary workaround, you can type the file extension manually (for example: photo.jpg) in the File name box, then select Save.

If the "save as type" line is blank when trying to save an image or photo, it could be due to a few reasons. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:

    1. Check File Associations: Make sure that the file types you are trying to save are correctly associated with their respective applications. Sometimes, file associations can get corrupted.
    2. Update Your Software: Ensure that your Microsoft Office applications are up to date. Sometimes, updates can fix bugs related to saving files.
    3. Repair Office: You can try repairing your Office installation. Go to Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, select Microsoft Office, and then choose the Repair option.
    4. Reset Settings: If the issue persists, consider resetting the settings of the application you are using (like Word or PowerPoint) to their defaults, as custom settings might be causing the problem.
    5. Reinstall Office: As a last resort, if none of the above solutions work, you may need to uninstall and then reinstall Microsoft Office to restore default settings and functionality.

These steps should help you restore the "save as type" options when saving images or photos.
