    Hello David K,

Thank you for reaching out in Microsoft Q&A forum.

I understand how frustrating this is, especially since Word was working normally before and suddenly you can’t create or edit documents.

On Mac, this usually happens when something around permissions, file state, or licensing changes in the background (for example after a macOS update, a Word update, or a licensing refresh). With Office Home & Business 2021, Word should always allow editing once the license is recognized.

    You can try these steps:

    1. Confirm the document is not read‑only or locked
      • Open the file in Finder > Get Info > make sure Locked is unchecked and you has Read & Write access. Read‑only files will open but cannot be edited.
    2. Check Word’s license status
      • Open Word > Word menu > About Word.
      • Confirm it shows Office Home & Business 2021 as activated. If Word temporarily loses the local license file, editing is disabled even though it worked before.
    3. Sign out of Word and sign back in
      • Word > Sign Out, then restart Word and sign back in with the account used to activate Office 2021.
    4. Allow Office background components
      • macOS Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions > allow Microsoft Office / Microsoft Corporation items to run in the background.

If none of the above restores editing, reinstalling Office: Download and install or reinstall Office 2021, Office 2019, or Office 2016

    Hope this helps

If you are unable to create or edit Word documents on your Mac with Office Home & Business 2021, here are some troubleshooting steps you can follow:

    1. Check Background Permissions: Ensure that the necessary background permissions for Microsoft Office are enabled in your macOS settings. Go to System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions and make sure that Microsoft Corporation and Microsoft Office Licensing are allowed to run in the background.
    2. Uninstall and Reinstall Office: Sometimes, reinstalling the application can resolve issues. To do this, open Finder, go to Applications, select all Microsoft Office applications, and move them to Trash. After that, reinstall Office from your Microsoft account dashboard.
    3. Use the Mac License Removal Tool: If there are issues with your license, you can use the Mac License removal tool to clear any corrupted license files. You can find instructions on how to do this in the Microsoft support documentation.
    4. Sign Out and Sign Back In: Open any Office app, sign out of your account, and then sign back in. Make sure you are using the correct account associated with your Office license.
    5. Check for Updates: Ensure that your Office applications are up to date. Sometimes, updates can fix bugs and issues.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, you may need to contact Microsoft support for further assistance.
