If your concern is that a document has been created by having the space bar pressed twice between words or between sentences you can use Find & Replace to eliminate the extraneous spacing. In the Find what field press the space bar twice, in the Replace with field press the space bar once then click the Replace button to replace selectively or use Replace All if you're sure it's appropriate.

One more possibility is that the excessive spacing between letters was caused by the Immersive Reader, I suppose. See https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/office/use-immersive-reader-in-word-a857949f-c91e-4c97-977c-a4efcaf9b3c1#picktab=macos .

The space bar is now working to set single space between words.

The SpaceBar would normally add a single space character. What happened when you pressed that key before (since it now appears to have fixed itself)? In particular, note that spaces may be larger than an "ordinary" space if the text paragraph is set to full justification.

To set single spacing between words in Microsoft Word for Mac, follow these detailed steps:

    1. Open Your Document: Launch Microsoft Word and open the document you want to edit.
    2. Select the Text: If you want to apply single spacing to a specific part of your document, highlight that text. If you want to apply it to the entire document, press Command + A to select all.
    3. Access the Home Tab: Navigate to the Home tab located in the top menu bar.
    4. Line and Paragraph Spacing: Look for the Line and Paragraph Spacing button in the toolbar. This button usually has an icon that looks like lines with arrows pointing up and down.
    5. Choose Line Spacing Options: Click on the Line and Paragraph Spacing button, and from the dropdown menu, select Line Spacing Options.
    6. Adjust Spacing Settings: In the dialog box that appears:
      • Under the Spacing section, set both Before and After to 0 pt. This ensures there is no extra space before or after paragraphs.
      • For Line spacing, select Single from the dropdown menu.
    7. Apply Changes: Click OK to apply your changes. This will set the spacing between words to single spacing and remove any additional spacing between paragraphs.
    8. Check Your Document: Review your document to ensure that the spacing appears as desired.

By following these steps, you should achieve single spacing between words and eliminate any unwanted spacing in your document.
