I had been using Outlook classic to manage my email for multiple accounts. Lately, Outlook stops responding and has to be canceled or restarted. The problem has become so frequent as to make Outlook unusable.

What is causing this and how can I fix it?

See if you have new update available, particularly KB5078127  https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/january-24-2026-kb5078127-os-builds-26200-7628-and-26100-7628-out-of-band-cf5777f6-bb4e-4adb-b9cd-2b64df577491

If not, go to Windows Settings > Windows Update > Update History > Uninstall Updates Look for KB5074109 and uninstall it for now. Restart the computer and then see if it improves.

Outlook Classic may stop responding due to several reasons, including:

    1. Outdated Software: Not having the latest updates installed can lead to performance issues.
    2. Conflicts with Other Processes: If Outlook is in use by another process or if there are conflicts with other applications, it may freeze.
    3. Corrupted Data Files: Damaged Outlook data files can cause the application to become unresponsive.
    4. Add-ins Interference: Previously installed add-ins might interfere with Outlook's functionality.
    5. Antivirus Software Conflicts: Outdated antivirus software or its integration with Outlook can lead to issues.
    6. Large Mailboxes: Having excessively large mailboxes can also contribute to performance problems.
    7. Corrupted User Profile: A corrupted user profile can prevent Outlook from functioning correctly.

To resolve these issues, you can try the following steps:

    • Update Outlook: Ensure that you have the latest updates installed for Microsoft Office.
    • Repair Office Programs: Use the repair feature in Control Panel to fix any issues with Office programs.
    • Repair Outlook Data Files: Use the Inbox repair tool (scanpst.exe) to repair corrupted data files.
    • Disable Add-ins: Start Outlook in safe mode (hold down the Ctrl key while starting Outlook) to see if add-ins are causing the issue.
    • Check Antivirus Software: Ensure your antivirus software is up-to-date and check if it conflicts with Outlook.
    • Create a New User Profile: If the user profile is corrupted, creating a new profile may resolve the issue.
    • Run the Classic Outlook Advanced Diagnostics troubleshooter: This tool can help identify and resolve issues with Outlook.

By following these steps, you should be able to identify and fix the problems causing Outlook to stop responding.
