How do I create an account to manage both school/work access and my business?

I want to create an account that I can use to manage school or work access, and also use it to manage my business. I’m not sure whether I should create a Microsoft Entra ID (Azure AD) account, a personal Microsoft account, or a work/school account.

What is the correct type of account to create if I want to manage my business and also use Microsoft services for school or work? And how do I set it up properly?

    Dear @Successfulkelechi

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

As a moderator, I don't have the tools to investigate your specific tenant directly because this is a user-to-user support forum. Moderators and contributors, including external Microsoft employees, cannot directly intervene in Microsoft product features or access back-end systems. Our role is limited to providing technical guidance on reported issues, requests, or ideas. However, I will try my best to guide you as clearly as possible.

    If you want to:

    • Manage a business or organization
    • Manage users, permissions, devices, and security
    • Use Microsoft 365 (Outlook, Teams, SharePoint), Entra, and Intune
    • Use it for work or school

You need to create a Work or School account. More specifically, you need to purchase a business subscription. For more details, you can refer and buy subscription in Find the best Microsoft 365 plan for your business

Personal Microsoft Account: Not suitable for managing a business

    • Used only for individuals
    • No organizational management features
    • No management of users, permissions, or devices
    • Not suitable for professional work or school environments
    • Should only be used for personal purposes

Work or School Account: When you purchase a business subscription, you will create a tenant. You will hold the Global Admin account and use that account to manage your tenant within the Admin Center. You can manage users, licenses, subscriptions, and everything else within the admin portal.

    References:

Microsoft Entra ID is not a personal account. It is an identity management system (directory).

Work/School accounts always reside within Microsoft Entra ID.

For example, when you buy a business subscription, you use that Global Admin account to manage the Admin Center, Entra admin, Exchange, etc.

"Work or School" is the account type. For instance, when you create a user in the Admin Center, that user's account is referred to as a work account.

To manage both school/work access and your business effectively, you should create a work or school account. This type of account is designed to provide access to enterprise cloud services like Azure, Microsoft Intune, and Microsoft 365, and it will allow you to manage your business while also accessing Microsoft services for school or work.

When setting up your account, you can follow these steps:

    1. Sign Up for Microsoft Entra ID: If you already have access to Microsoft Entra ID, use your work or school account to sign up. This will create a cloud-based directory for your organization.
    2. Connect to Azure Services: Once your Microsoft Entra ID is set up, you can connect your organization to Azure services, ensuring you have the necessary permissions and access.
    3. Manage Access: With a work or school account, you can manage user access and permissions for your organization, which is essential for both business and educational purposes.

If you do not have an organization yet, you can create one in Azure DevOps and then connect it to Microsoft Entra ID.

For more detailed guidance, you can refer to the relevant Microsoft documentation on setting up these accounts.
