I have a support contract with Microsoft. I have just purchased a new laptop and I ask if Microsoft support officers will help me transition files and software across from my old laptop?

    See https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/transfer-your-files-and-settings-to-a-new-windows-pc-57b8d163-d80e-44fe-8247-62f7cf84a8ed .

Note that your applications, such as Microsoft Office, must be installed on the new device. There is no automatic transfer for those.

    Hi ,

I'm Dyari. Thanks for reaching out. I will be happy to assist you in this regard.

If you have Microsoft 365 Basic or any other cloud storage plan with 100GB storage or more, you can use Sync:
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/sync-files-with-onedrive-in-windows-615391c4-2bd3-4aae-a42a-858262e42a49

Or, you can use an external hard drive to transfer data (Only your data).

As for transferring installed software, unfortunately, creating a folder like OneDrive\Application and copying installed programs there will not work. Installed software depends on Windows system files, registry entries, services, and licenses, not just folders.

So syncing apps through OneDrive won’t make them usable on the new computer. The best option is to reinstall them on your new computer.

Please feel free to ask if you need further assistance.
