Approximately every third time I open my screen my PIN number doesn’t work and I am prompted to set up my pin again. I get the message “something went wrong” and error code Ox80284001. I have done this 3 times in the last month and a half. I have a new hp omnibook, I am on windows 11. Everything I have is up to date Also the screen will not recognize my face to sign in. This is getting very annoying

    Hi Karen Paramore,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A forum. I understand how frustrating it is to be repeatedly asked to reset your PIN, especially on a newer device and to have face recognition stop working at the same time.

What’s happening is that Windows may be temporarily losing access to the secure sign‑in information used for your PIN and face recognition. When that happens, Windows prompts you to set the PIN up again and disables face sign‑in until the sign‑in data is rebuilt.

To start, please sign in using your account password, not the PIN. On the sign‑in screen, select Sign‑in options, choose the Password option (keyboard icon), and log in with your password. This should allow us to safely reset the sign‑in settings.

Once you’re signed in, open File Explorer and paste the following path into the address bar, then press Enter: C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Local\Microsoft In that location, you’ll see a folder named NGC. Please delete the NGC folder. This folder stores the encrypted data for your PIN and face recognition, and removing it allows Windows to recreate it cleanly.

After deleting the folder, restart the computer. When the system comes back up, sign in again using your password (not the PIN).

Next, go to Settings > Accounts > Sign‑in options and set up a new PIN under PIN (Windows Hello). It’s important that the PIN is created first, as it’s the foundation for the other sign‑in methods. Once the PIN is working, return to Sign‑in options and set up Face recognition (Windows Hello) again by following the on‑screen steps.

As a final recommendation, in Sign‑in options, scroll to Additional settings and turn off “For improved security, only allow Windows Hello sign‑in for Microsoft accounts on this device.” This allows Windows to fall back to password sign‑in if needed and helps prevent this issue from recurring.

After completing these steps, both your PIN and face recognition should work normally without prompting you to reset them again.

Thanks again for your patience, and please let me know how it goes.

The error code Ox80284001 you are encountering during the PIN setup in Windows 11 can be frustrating. This issue may arise due to several reasons, including problems with the Windows Hello setup or related services. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot the problem:

    1. Check for Updates: Ensure that your Windows 11 is fully updated, as updates can fix bugs related to Windows Hello.
    2. Remove and Re-add PIN: Go to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options, remove your existing PIN, and then try to set it up again.
    3. Biometric Authentication: Since you mentioned that the face recognition is not working, make sure that the required biometric services are running. You can check this by going to System Information and looking for entries related to bioiso.exe and ngciso.exe. If they are not running, try restarting the biometric service.
    4. Device Manager: Check if your biometric device is recognized in the Device Manager under Biometric devices. If not, reinstall the driver by right-clicking on the device and selecting Uninstall Device, then restart your computer to allow Windows to reinstall the driver.
    5. Feedback Hub: If the issue persists, consider filing a feedback item using the Feedback Hub to report the problem to Microsoft.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, you may need to contact Microsoft Support for further assistance.
