Backup and restore Word 2007 settings after problematic behavior

Word 2007 started exhibiting random odd behavior. When I tried to close a document, the interface got cloudy, and I got the notification "Word is not responding", with that spinning circle..

WORD CIRCLE AND SHADE

or sometimes, it did this

WORD ONLY BACKGROUND

and I'm wondering if this may be a key to what is responsible.

WORD PRINTER

I'm not trying to print. I don't use my printer. Occasionally, I use the "Print to PDF", to save a file, bu that's it.

I was going to uninstall/reinstall, but I did a repair instead. I'm waiting to see if the symptoms return.

In the meantime, I want to backup the Word settings. A search said they were contained in Normal.dotm, however, I just made a few Word settings changes, but the modified date of Normal.dotm is still from May of last year.

The repair utility in Office 2007 is feeble, so an uninstall and reinstall may be necessary to fix the issue. If so, be sure to have your original installation medium (probably a DVD) and product key, you will need both to reinstall.

Before you repair from the installation disc and/or reinstall, check which printer is set as the Windows default. Especially older versions of Word may crash if they cannot see the printer. For example, you can set the Microsoft Print to PDF virtual driver as the default (this driver is installed by default in newer Windows versions).

I did the repair, and set the printer to Microsoft Print to PDF. It was ok for a while,, but then started acting up again.

Somehow, it had reverted back to this.

Before I attempt an uninstall, should I first remove this, to see if that takes care of things?
