WANT TO REMOVE MO NUMBER FROM OLD ACCOUNT

Hello Microsoft 365 Developer Program Support Team,

I am requesting assistance with an issue preventing me from accessing the Microsoft 365 Developer Program.

Your system is incorrectly detecting that my phone number is linked to the account:

<PII removed>

However, this number is no longer associated with that account, and I need it to be used with my new developer account:

<PII removed>

When I attempt to sign in to the Developer Portal, I receive the following error:

Code: 40901

Message: “Your mobile number is linked with an existing account”

MS-Correlation Id: <PII removed>

Please release my phone number from the old tenant so I can complete registration with my new account.

Just a quick note that this forum is a peer-to-peer community, so while members can share advice and experiences only. We do not have access to the internal systems required to modify Developer Program profiles or unlink phone numbers from existing accounts. 

The 40901 error usually indicates that the phone number is still associated with a previous or inactive Microsoft Developer Program account. You can try visiting https://developer.microsoft.com/microsoft-365/profile using the account that was originally linked to your phone number. If you still have access, choose Delete Profile to remove the old Developer account. This may help release the phone number so you can use it again for a new registration. Please note that it can take some time, usually up to 60 days, before the number becomes available for reuse.

If you need to create a new developer account right away, you might consider using a different phone number, such as a work mobile or secondary line, to complete the registration process immediately.

To resolve the issue of your phone number being linked to an old account, you will need to delete your existing Microsoft 365 Developer Program account before you can use that phone number with a new account. Here are the steps you can follow:

1. Sign in to your Developer Program dashboard using the email associated with your old account.
2. Once signed in, navigate to the option to Delete Profile to remove your existing account.
3. After deleting the account, you should be able to register a new Developer Program account using the same phone number.

Please note that you can only have one Developer Program account associated with your phone number, and if you need to set up a new account, the old one must be deleted first.
