Microsoft on-premises server product that runs Office Online.
Dear Matlou Moabelo
Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Q&A Forum. I understand how confusing it can be when Microsoft Office opens but you’re unable to type or use any of its features.
First, please check whether Microsoft Office is activated. If Office is not activated, editing and typing will be disabled. Open Word or Excel, go to File > Account, and look for the activation status. If you see “Unlicensed Product” or “Activation Required,” please sign in with the account associated with your Office subscription or enter your product key.
Please also check whether your Microsoft 365 subscription is active. If it has expired, you’ll only be able to view documents without editing them.
You can verify your subscription status at the following links:
- For a personal account: https://account.microsoft.com/services
- For a business account: https://portal.office.com/account/?ref=Harmony#subscriptions
Next, check if the document is opening in Protected View. If a yellow banner appears at the top of the document, click Enable Editing to allow changes.
If editing is restricted in the document, go to Review > Restrict Editing and select Stop Protection if available.
Please also try the suggestions provided by Q&A Assist, including:
- Checking for updates
- Repairing Microsoft Office
- Restarting your computer
- Checking for conflicting software
If none of these steps resolve the issue, please reply with more details, such as:
- The Office version you are using
- Your device’s system version
- Any error messages you are seeing
- The license you're holding
Looking forward to your reply.
