Unable to get in to my M365 Developer Tenant

My dev tenant expired in 2024 however I wanted to start using it again so I signed in to the M365 Developer Portal and the only option I have is "sign up" So i tried to sign up and it says I was unable to sign up due to the number already being used on the account? even though the account I'm trying to sign in with IS the one that is registered to the dev tenant, I now seem to just be stuck in a loop. I know which account is associated with the dev tenant and I'm trying to "delete profile" so I can spin up a new tenant however I can't get to "delete profile" as I just get stuck in a sign up loop?

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated

    Hi Oliver Woodhouse

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A Forum!

Have a good day and I hope you're doing well!

I completely understand how frustrating it is to be stuck in this "sign-up loop," especially when you know exactly which account is linked to your tenant. I have encountered several similar cases recently, and I’d like to share the most practical workaround based on my research and experience.

Currently, the system is flagging your number because the backend still retains the association with your expired profile/tenant. Even if you were able to access the profile page (https://developer.microsoft.com/microsoft-365/profile) to initiate a "Delete Profile" request, the system often requires 60 days or more to fully wipe the data and release your phone number.

To bypass this loop immediately without waiting months, the most effective solution is to use a completely new mobile number (one that has never been used for an M365 Developer account) during the verification step. This usually forces the system to let you proceed.

Before you proceed, I want to share some critical updates regarding the program so you don't face another roadblock after fixing the phone issue.

Microsoft has updated the eligibility requirements for the Developer Program. Currently, the program is focused on users who have an active Visual Studio Professional or Enterprise subscription.

    • If you do not have one of these subscriptions: You may not be eligible to provision a new developer sandbox at this time, even if you pass the phone verification.
    • If you do have a subscription: Please ensure you are signing in with the email associated with your Visual Studio ID.

These requirements are detailed in the Microsoft 365 Developer Program FAQ. In particular, I recommend reviewing the following two key topics:

I hope these insights save you some time and clarify the situation. If you have any further concerns or questions, please let me know.

    Best regards.

It sounds like you're experiencing issues with accessing your Microsoft 365 Developer Tenant due to an expired account and a sign-up loop. Here are some steps you can take to resolve this situation:

    1. Ensure Correct Account: Double-check that you are signing in with the correct account that is associated with your Developer Tenant. Sometimes, work and personal accounts can appear similar, leading to confusion.
    2. Recover Your Email: If you are unsure of the email address, you can recover it using your phone number associated with the account. Follow the recovery steps provided in the Microsoft documentation.
    3. Delete Profile: Since you are stuck in a sign-up loop and cannot access the option to delete your profile, you may need to contact Microsoft support for assistance. They can help you delete your existing account so you can create a new one.
    4. Contact Support: If the above steps do not resolve the issue, consider reaching out to the Microsoft 365 Data Protection team or the Azure Data Protection team, depending on your account type. They can assist you with account access issues.
    5. Wait Period: Remember that if you delete your Developer Program account, you can only create a new subscription after 60 days from the deletion.

These steps should help you navigate the issues you're facing with your Microsoft 365 Developer Tenant.
