Had activation problem (repeat from Nov 2025) Reinstalled, now can't even open a file

I have an annual MS Office subscription. I wasn't able to save changes to excel or word files suddenly (this also happened in Nov 2025). I uninstalled, following MS online guidance and reinstalled from my account. Now if I open Excel, I can't even get access to my files to open them.

    Hi,

Thank you for sharing your question. I understand how frustrating it is to experience activation issues again and then lose the ability to open your files after reinstalling Microsoft Office. It makes sense to feel concerned, especially since the same activation problem occurred previously and you rely on your subscription for daily work. Situations like this can happen when Office doesn’t activate correctly after a reinstall, which causes Word and Excel to enter reduced functionality mode where files cannot be saved or opened, as described in Microsoft’s support guidance on activation and subscription issues.

The usual resolution is to sign out of Office on all devices, restart the apps, sign back in with the correct subscription account, and confirm activation status at https://account.microsoft.com/services. You may also need to repair the Office installation or check whether your files are stored in a location that requires sign‑in, such as OneDrive or SharePoint, which may still show you as not authenticated.

To help narrow down the cause, may I ask whether Word or Excel shows any yellow activation banners or messages such as “Unlicensed Product” or “Activation Required” when you open them? I encourage you to follow up so we can work together to restore full access to your documents and ensure your subscription activates properly moving forward.

    I hope this helps.

    Best Regards,

    Noel

It seems that you are experiencing issues with your Microsoft Office subscription, particularly with Excel and Word. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot the problem:

    1. Check Subscription Status: Ensure that your Microsoft 365 subscription is active by visiting your account at https://account.live.com.
    2. Sign In Correctly: Make sure you are signed in with the correct account associated with your subscription in the Office applications.
    3. Update License: In Excel or Word, go to File > Account, and click on Update License. Log in again if prompted.
    4. Repair Office: If the above steps do not resolve the issue, consider performing an Online Repair of Office. This can often fix activation issues. You can find guidance on how to do this in the Microsoft support documentation.
    5. Uninstall and Reinstall: If problems persist, you might need to uninstall Office completely and then reinstall it. Make sure to use the Microsoft 365 Uninstall troubleshooter to ensure a clean removal before reinstalling.
    6. Check for Updates: Ensure that your macOS and Office applications are up to date, as updates can resolve compatibility issues.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, you may want to reach out to Microsoft Support for further assistance.
