Why are Microsoft making WMP so unusable?

I have always used WMP and the reason i first started with PC's was for the music storage and MP3 sync. Recently Microsoft have changed WMP MTP settings so that i can no longer sync my Sony MP3 player and now i notice that the album information for ripping cd's is no longer available. So my question is why are Microsoft trying to make WMP unusable. Are they trying to push people to a streaming only service and just expect people to ignore their own personal collection of cd's. The whole WMP situation is extremely frustrating as is the lack of thought when it comes to customers.

    Hi,

Thank you for sharing your question.

To move forward, there are two parts to resolve: replacing the missing CD metadata function and restoring dependable device transfers. For CD ripping and tagging, use an external metadata source while Microsoft’s endpoint remains unavailable by ripping in your preferred tool and tagging with community databases such as MusicBrainz via Picard or by using third‑party rippers like Exact Audio Copy or MusicBee, which can automatically fetch album and track info. This avoids the “unable to connect” errors now seen in both legacy WMP and the new Media Player.

The reason you’re seeing this now is that Microsoft’s online CD lookup endpoint stopped returning results sometime before late December 2025 and community reports and press testing confirm the service no longer responds in Windows 10 or 11, which aligns with the broader de‑emphasis of legacy WMP features as Windows moves to the newer Media Player app. While Microsoft hasn’t posted a public rollback, the behavior is consistent across devices and versions, which suggests a permanent retirement of that metadata service.

To help you quickly get back to an enjoyable workflow, my recommended resolution is to keep using your local collection with third‑party tagging for metadata, to sync by MTP‑aware tools or manual copy when WMP’s Sync doesn’t appear, and to retain the legacy WMP only as a player if you prefer its interface while relying on external tools for ripping and tagging going forward. This approach preserves your CD library without pushing you to streaming and avoids the current service outage inside WMP.

May I ask which exact Walkman model you have and whether Windows shows it as an MTP device in File Explorer, and also whether you prefer to keep ripping inside WMP or are open to using a dedicated ripper so we can set up precise steps for your setup? I encourage you to follow up with those details and I’ll tailor a step‑by‑step plan to restore reliable syncing and accurate album info for your personal collection.

    Best Regards,

    Noel
