When I go to edit a Word document that I was given by someone else, I don't have the ability to change anything to New Times Roman font, even though that is the font is most of the document

Moderator Note: Changed from "New Times Roman" to "Times New Roman."

    Dear @Anne C. Rees

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

I understand how inconvenient it can be when a standard font like Times New Roman suddenly disappears, especially if your document depends on it.

Times New Roman is a long standing Microsoft system font that normally comes preinstalled with Windows and Office. If it no longer appears in Word, one of the following situations is usually the cause.

Ensure your Windows operating system and Word desktop app are fully updated.

Option 1: Check whether the font is installed or hidden

Open Windows Settings > Go to Personalization.

Select Fonts and search for Times New Roman.

If the font appears, select it and make sure it is not hidden.

If you are using the option “Hide fonts based on language settings”, try turning it off temporarily and check again.

Option 2: Reinstall the font in Windows if it is missing

Locate the Times New Roman font files on your device, such as Times.ttf, Timesbd.ttf, Timesi.ttf, or Timesbi.ttf. If you do not already have the font files, you can download them using the following link: Times New Roman - Download fonts

Double click each file and choose Install or Install for all users

You can also open Windows Settings > Go to Personalization.

Choose Fonts and drag the font files into the Add fonts area.

Option 3: Repair Microsoft 365 Apps if Word still does not list the font

Option 4: Reinstall Office if the issue continues

Please uninstall all Office applications and reinstall them via office.com using your school account.

Navigate to Apps > All apps > Install apps > Choose Microsoft 365 apps > Apps & devices > Install office.

If you're looking for a font whose name starts with "New", you're in the wrong place. The font's name is "Times New Roman".

If New Times Roman is missing from your font choices in Word, it may be due to the font not being installed on your system or it could be a permissions issue. Here are some steps you can take to resolve the issue:

    1. Check if the font is installed: Ensure that New Times Roman is installed on your system. You can do this by checking the Fonts folder in Windows.
    2. Install missing fonts: If the font is missing, you may need to install it. In Windows 10, certain fonts might not be available by default after an upgrade. You can enable optional features to add them back to your system. For more information on how to install missing fonts, refer to the Microsoft documentation.
    3. Check font permissions: If the font is installed but still not appearing, check the permissions of the Fonts folder. You can do this by opening a Command Prompt and running the command icacls C:\Windows\Fonts. Ensure that the permissions are set correctly.
    4. Restart Word: After making any changes, restart Microsoft Word to see if the font appears in the font list.
    5. Clear font cache: If the problem persists, you may want to clear the font cache. This can be done by quitting all Office applications, using Font Book on Mac, or following specific instructions for Windows.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, consider contacting Microsoft support or checking with the font manufacturer for further assistance.
