Microsoft Word Read Aloud works Intermittently

For reasons completely unclear to me, Microsoft Word's Read Aloud function only works intermittently. It is neither fully broken nor fully operational. Only sometimes Read Aloud will actually read text out loud.

Why?

Let me guess. I need read though a convoluted list of 20 random things to try which may or may not work - but will completely distract me from the work I need to finish. (i.e. the document that I need to finish and send by C.O.B.)

Since I have a deadline, I'll find another solution. But I'd like to know if it is possible to have a reliable Read Aloud function in Microsoft Word. For now, I'll use a different word processor to accomplish reading out loud. I need to focus on work - not troubleshooting dysfunctional software.

I'm so tired of this wonky round-and-round stuff.

    This is the best solution - that just works without the distraction of dysfunctional software.

    Basically, I've 100% bypassed Microsoft Word's Read Aloud function.

    This is how I did it:

    I opened OneDrive from my MacBook (using my Safari browser) and then opened the Word Document that I have been working on. With the Word Document open in Safari inside my MacBook I then use Apple macOS's built in text to speech. This totally works and is the best way (that I know of anyway).
