Finally figured out that CTRL + . or CTRL + , would advance emails or go back to previous ones. That no longer works. What is the new workaround???

When I hit Control + anything I just get these black boxes at the top. They do nothing and the emails don't advance or go back. This is super frustrating!!!

If the overlay keeps appearing when you press Ctrl, check for a stuck Alt key, Sticky/Filter Keys, or any key-remapping tools (PowerToys/AutoHotkey/keyboard software) that could be translating Ctrl into Alt. Also confirm you’re actually in the message list (not search box/ribbon) and in new Outlook go to Settings (gear) > Keyboard shortcuts and ensure shortcuts are enabled and set to the expected scheme.
Hi! If you’re in the new Outlook for Windows, Microsoft changed next/previous message to "Ctrl + >" and "Ctrl + <".
If you’re in classic Outlook with a message opened in its own window, still "Ctrl +" . for Next item and "Ctrl +" , for Previous item.
