Win 2016 Server activation issues.

Hello,

I have a prebuilt PC with OEM Windows 2016 server licence.

Currently, the system is unable to reach the Microsoft activation servers. When attempting to re-enter the product key, I receive an error stating that the license has reached its activation limit and is now blocked.

Every support line redirects me to aka.ms/aoh but the system fails to verify my installation ID.

How do I fix it?

    Hello,

The error you’re seeing is expected behavior with OEM Windows Server 2016 licenses. OEM keys are tied to the original hardware they were shipped with, and activation is limited to that hardware profile. When the system attempts to re‑activate and the activation servers detect changes or multiple activations, the key is flagged as having reached its limit. That’s why re‑entering the product key results in the “blocked” message.

The reason you’re being redirected to aka.ms/aoh is because OEM activation requires the Activation Troubleshooter and, in some cases, manual verification of the installation ID. If the installation ID fails to validate, it usually means the OEM key is no longer eligible for re‑activation outside its original hardware context. Unlike retail or volume licenses, OEM licenses cannot be reset or transferred.

To resolve this, you need to confirm whether the server hardware is still the original motherboard and system board from the OEM vendor. If it is, then the activation failure is a technical issue and you should contact the OEM vendor directly, not Microsoft, because OEM activation support is handled by the hardware manufacturer. If the hardware has changed, the OEM license cannot be re‑used, and the only supported path is to purchase a new Windows Server license (either retail or volume).

I hope you've found something useful here. If it helps you get more insight into the issue, it's appreciated to accept the answer. Should you have more questions, feel free to leave a message. Have a nice day!

To resolve the activation issue with your Windows Server 2016, you can follow these steps:

    1. Contact Microsoft Licensing Activation Centers: Since your license has reached its activation limit and is blocked, you need to contact the Microsoft Licensing Activation Centers for assistance. They can provide a new Multiple Activation Key (MAK) if necessary. You can find their contact information on the Microsoft website.
    2. Re-enter the Product Key: If you have a new MAK, try re-entering it after contacting support. Make sure to enter it correctly.
    3. Check for Activation Limits: If you're using a Key Management Service (KMS) activation, ensure that the KMS host is properly configured and that it has not exceeded its activation limit. You may need to request more activations if this is the case.
    4. Use the Diagnostic Tool: You can also use the Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant (SaRA) tool, which simplifies Windows KMS Activation troubleshooting. This tool can help identify specific activation error codes and provide targeted solutions.

If the system fails to verify your installation ID, ensure that you are entering the correct ID as required by the support process.
